I have an old 8G flash stick. Many of the files on the flash stick are no longer readable. I do not even remember where I got the files on the stick. I would like to delete all info on the flash stick. I have tried to reformat the stick but I keep getting that the drive is "Right Protected". What do I need to do to correct this issue.
Thanking you ahead in this matter,
iddawg

Look carefully at all sides of the unit. You should see a little switch. If you move it from where it now sits you should be able for format the USB stick.

Also, the controller may be shot and the error is simply Windows not knowing how to proceed.

DaffyKantReed,
There is not a little switch on the flash stick any where. It is an "Attache". I have turn the flash stick over and over 6 times to make sure.
Oh well, thanks any way.

To be perfectly honest with you; I have not thought about that idea. Just went to the manufacturers site and pop off an email to there tech support. I don't know why I did not think of that myself. I'll let you know how I make out.
Thanks.

3 Options

HP USB Disk Storage Format Utility

This will format most USB flash drives
It can be known to recover Flash drives that are un-responsive too.

---------

Hard Disk Low Level Format Tool (USB Flash drive "format" that is )

---------

The following entails editing the Registry
warning: If you are not comfortable in doing this, or inexperienced with the registry, then don't do it ! Incorrectly modifying the registry can have drastic effects on your system.

Start->Run-> Regedit
Expand: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\StorageDevicePolicies
(Note: if this key doesn't exist, then disregard this option, and close Regedit)
Double click on the string ‘WriteProtect’ and change the ‘Value Data’ box to ‘0’
Close Regedit, and Restart

Please reply if any of these options helped you

I tried the two tools to no avail.
As far as the registry goes; computers are just to new to me and I don't feel comfortable in doing this.
Thanks any way and let me add also thanks to all for all the suggestions. (That is before I forget to.)

I really thought that would work. :)

But some manufacturer of these drives have their own little format tool, so you may want to look into that.

I'd also suggest trying it on another computer, just to be sure :)

Well so much for running the "Preformat" from Attache the file can only be run XP. When I double click on the installer it will not install. And I don't know how to run Windows 7 in XP mode any way.

You need to download it :) http://www.microsoft...c/download.aspx

You must have Windows 7 Professional, Enterprise, or Ultimate to run Windows XP Mode

Please locate an XP machine (preferably)
And run those format utility tools on them

Now there's still more XP machines out there than anything else. You must know of somebody with one?

I contacted the manufacturer of the flash stick and they said to take the flash stick back to the store I purchased it at and get another one. The only problem is that the over fifty thing has kicked in and I can't remember where I purchase it at.
Just thought I would let you know.

lol I'm steadily closing into that age myself.
The worse part is when someone says, So what did you do yesterday? And I say, Umm.. now hangon, I will remember.. just wait .. :)
That's pretty bad

Anyway, good news about getting a new flash drive :)
If you ever get it that is :)
