1. Check you only have essential items set to start with Windows. Disable the rest (see below).
2. Run the 'Disk Defragmenter'.
To keep control over your startup items, install 'Ccleaner' from here: http://www.piriform....leaner/download
Open 'Ccleaner', click 'Tools' then 'Startup'
To disable or remove an entry, right-click it and choose the appropriate option from the context-menu .
Then reboot.
You can 'Google' an entry before disabling it, to find out what it does and whether it has to left alone.

Same computer, upgraded to Vista, or two different computers.
Please, post some computer info:
- processor type, amount of RAM (hold Windows logo key, hit Pause/Break key)
- hard drive size/free space (open "My Computer", right click on hard drive letter, click "Properties")
- security programs in use (antivirus, firewall)

+ "HP Software Update"
+ "IgfxTray"
+ "Malwarebytes Anti-Malware (reboot)"

Make sure, no other programs are running. If still a problem, run it from Safe Mode.

Go Start>Run (Start Search in Vista), type in:
msconfig
Click OK (hit Enter in Vista).
Click on Startup tab.
Click Disable all
IMPORTANT! In case of laptop, make sure, you do NOT disable any keyboard, or touchpad entries.
Click Services tab.
Put checkmark in Hide all Microsoft services
Click Disable all.
Click OK.
Restart computer in Normal Mode.
NOTE. If you use different firewall, than Windows firewall, turn Windows firewall on, just for this test, since your regular firewall won't be running.
If you use Windows firewall, you're fine.
