Hey guys, I'm having some problems installing Xp.

I have a brand new genuine XP kit to replace windows vista, so we can run the software/hardware I need at work. Before the installation even begins, while the XP CD is still loading files, I get a bluescreen telling me windows has encountered a problem, and was forced to shut down to protect the system. Basically something in Vista wont let the XP CD even begin installation.

I don't know what to do, I've been trying to re-format the hard-drive, IE blow away everything vista related, so it can't fight the XP installation. But some of the sys32 files can't even be removed. I've been doing a lot of research, and I've read some mixed opinions on the subject.

Some folks say you can't replace Vista w/ XP, some say it needs to be dual boot, I've also been reading about slip discs and SATA drivers, I'm really not sure how these are supposed to work. But I've made a SLip Disc and copied all the XP v3 files I could. Still, I keep comming back to the problem of the XP CD not even begging installation.

I'll upload a picture of the bluescreen when I bring my camera to work tomorrow. I guess what I really needs is an in-depth explanation of some of these tricks I've been reading about.

Right now I'm working with vistabootpro, I just set the Vista OS to legacy, I don't know if that will help at all! Also, for some reason I have a 1TB harddrive, yet I can only partition it into a 100GB and 900GB volume, so the dual boot isn't really feasible anyway.

So, I'm open to all suggestions! I really need help, I'm the one who ordered this computer. Not realising that NEITHER my software or hardware is supported by Vista or windows 7. XP is the only OS that will do the job.

Now, I'm pretty decent with computers, so don't ve afraid to lay it on thick. WHat it comes down to getting as many suggestions and possiblties to throw at this problem.

Thanks again in advance, I'll be back tomorrow with a pic of the error screen prior to XP installation.

If I've omitted important information, please don't be afraid to question me, all I know is I've got to solve this problem and get XP running. There is nothing I need to save on this computer. Since I have V3 of XP I think I have the important drivers as well, essentially nothing is too risky to try, as long as I end up with XP.

Thanks again, sorry about the long-winded rant. I'm very frustrated and worked up about this, kicking myself for not doing my homework.

Please, please, please help! I will be eternally grateful.

When creating a multi boot system, it's easier if the older MS OS is installed first.

If you do not need Vista at all, it should be pretty easy to delete all partitions and start fresh.

Could you please tell me if the computer in question is a laptop or desktop and the brand name and model number of the motherboard. This way we can find the correct SATA driver for you.

Hi Daffy, thanks for the response.

The computer is an HP Pavilion Elite HPE 180T, I'm not sure what the brand/model number of the motherboard is. Where would I find this information listed w/o having to open up the tower?
Interesting Update. I made a killdisc, deleted all hard-drive partitions and wiped the HD clean. Yet when I try to install XP, even on a 100% clean machiene, I still get the BSoD that says;

"A problem has been detected and windows has been forced to shut down to prevent further damage to your computer

Technical Information

STOP: (90x0000007B, 0XF78D2524, 0XC0000034, 0X00000000, 0X00000000)"

SO now the computer has a blank HDD, and still won't install XP, what is going on?

Thanks again very much for your response, just let me know where to find the Motherboard Information and I'll relay it here, thanks!!!!!

Edit: Okay I used Nlite to make a bootable ISO, I didn't attach any drivers, mostly because I'm not sure which ones I need or where they are located in the system files, is that going to be a problem? I'm going to try an install right now...

Edit again: One more thing, with the RAID slipstream program, it wants the root path where the system files are located. I thought that was in System32, but it's telling me that's not it, what am I missing?

Edit3: I followed the "How to Slipstream guide" and did everything except attach my drivers to the bootdisc. But when I restart with the new Nlite disc inserted, there's no option to boot from disc, the screen just stays blank, any suggestions?

EDIT4: Okay I got the Nlite boot disc to boot at startup, but ended up at the same BSoD that I get with the original installation CD. I found my drivers in sys32 and tried to attach them to the CD creation, but I'm not sure I did it correctly, I'm trying another boot disc now.

Thanks again.

You *must* choose the correct drivers for the OS you are about to install otherwise Windows XP setup can not "see" the hard drive. Look at the HP website to find your model number. Consider emailing or calling HP to get the chipset type.

If you still had Vista installed it would be easy to find the chipset in question.

I'm /guessing/ the chipset is an Intel ICH10 variant.

Read this thread and use nLite to slipstream the correct XP drivers. Worst case; XP will not install.

Hey Daffy, the Model is the HPE 180T, thanks for the link, I'm going to read some more....

If I need to, I can re-install Vista and verify the chipset, for the moment I'm going to read the link you gave me, thanks again.

I believe the motherboard is the 890GPA-UD3H Motherboard. With the AMD 890GX Chipset, the Intel website search didn't get any results.

EDIT: Okay I think I found the correct SATA drivers for the motherboard, I'm going to make another Nlite bootdisc now, wish me luck!

I don't know if this matters. But the computer I'm working on to make the bootable ISO is an XP machiene....

Looks like I was wrong about the ICH10. You will need to slipstream the ATI Catalyst 10.2 drivers for Windows XP. You did not say if you're using the 32 or the 64 bit version.

So if I understand correctly. I need to make the Nlite bootdisc with my Motherboards SATA driver, the AMD chipsets multiple drivers, Okay cool, I'll give it a try.

I don't know what I'm doing wrong, but so far only one of the bootdiscs I've made has actually launched upon startup.

What's the difference between PNP driver and textmode driver? I was under the impression that I needed to use textmode, but I think that might be one of the reasons my bootdiscs aren't working.

Will PNP work as well?

Good luck and thanks for mentioning the OS of the machine you are making the ISO on, because sometimes the OS matters when slipstreaming and making bootable USB sticks.

Any idea why I'm having trouble getting my boot discs to actually boot? I've been following the "How to slipstream SATA drivers" tutorial you linked to me, but it seems like I'm doing something wrong.

Edit: Or should I be inserting the slipstream disc after I've launched setup with the original XP cd when it asks me for addtional RAID drivers? Never mind, I found out it had something to do with a direct burn vs "creating an ISO" option, the direct burn to CD worked on boot, finding out right now if this will finally install....

EDIT 2: *Sigh*, no luck, same Blue Screen of death with the same error message.

I'm going to re-install Vista on the PC in question, and double check to make sure I've got the correct motherboard and chipset. Where in Vista would I find this information?

Thanks again Daffy, I'm amazed with your patience with me.

One more question, if I have additional drivers added to the Bootdisc I'm making, will it adversely affect installation? I'm wondering because I keep attaching all the drivers from sys32 from this XP machiene, but is it possible that's part of the problem?

thanks....again :)

In the past I have used Winrar to unpack the original ISO from MS. I then used the RAID slipstreamer utility to add the correct drivers. Finally I used MagicISO to create the ISO. From there I burnt it to a CD or DVD and installed without a hitch.

You will find information about the chipset in Device Manager. You can also run a utility like Everest, or CPUZ.

Adding more drivers will create a short delay in Windows setup as the extra drivers are loaded into RAM. Not a big thing.

Hey Daffy, thanks for all your help.

I just got off the phone with HP, turns out the model I got is only compatible with 64 bit Vista/7, so this computer is going back to the factory.

Once again, thanks for all your time and patience, take care!

No problem, SsevenN.

With a little bit more work you can successfully slipstream then install Windows XP 32 bit. I could not get the standalone chipset drivers directly from AMD, but I did get them from the manufacturer of the motherboard.

Using nLite, integrate all of the files in the realtek folder. Also, integrate all of the files in the sata folder which I've created for you. Create and burn your ISO. Try booting and see how far you get. If that fails we can look at any SATA modes in the BIOS, assuming they exist.
