I just bought windows 7 yesterday and made an attempt to install it on my computer all day but continually had the same error message come up...

"A required CD/DVD device driver is missing. If you have a driver floppy disk, CD, DVDm or USB flash drive, please insert it now. Note. If the windows installation media is in the drive, you can safely remove it for this step"

when i read online people are saying they have a torrented copy but mine is absolute legit. I spent an hour with microsoft which they finally came to the conculsion that my hard disk driver was not up to date. but when i search for new drivers to install it says no new updates are available. what am i doing wrong?

Are you upgrading or performing a full clean install? Installing from within Windows or booting from the CD? Is your CD/DVD-ROM a SATA drive?

i've tried installing after windows xp has booted up and i've also tried a clean install from the beginning, neither have worked. i know my hard disk is a sata because it says on the front, but i think the cd/dvd drive is 'e-ide/atapi'. is that what you were asking for?

Probably bad media. Do you have problems with reading any other CD's? Also, if you could try a different CD-ROM that would rule out a bad drive. It sounds like just bad media to me though, return it to wherever you got it and exchange it for another copy.

Windows 7 will not work as an upgrade to Windows XP...the XP partition will have to be deleted and Windows 7 installed on the Unallocated Space that results. How far along in the installation are you getting before the error occurs?

Nine times out of ten deleting the old partition and then doing the Windows 7 installation will get you past the driver error you are seeing.

nope i don't think that's the cause in this scenario. at the same time i purchased windows 7 i also bought a new hard disk tried to do an install on that and received that exact same error message. the process doesn't actually start. i get the select my language location and there is a third option but don't remember it right now. i click next goes to blue screen with starting the install the after about 30 seconds the message comes up. i'll use message now because it actually doesn't have an error code with it so idk??

Do you see any of the screens shown HERE? If so, at what point do you receive the error message?

i get to slide 5 where i can click on install now. it'll go to slide 6. however during that loading phase in slide 6, my slide 7 is not the same where i can view the license agreement. my slide 7 would be the time the message interrupts the screen

Hmmmmm...

Where did you get the install media? Is it a Microsoft Retail version, an OEM version, or a downloaded version that you've burned?

Is the disk clean and free of scratches?

i just bought it from a retail store yesterday brand spanking new. would the fact that my version of windows xp is from a torrent? i was under the impression doing a clean install would take care of that...

A clean install should take care of the questionable install.

Installing Windows 7 on some older machines can be problematic. Did you, by chance, run the Windows 7 Upgrade Advisor on the machine to see if all the hardware is compatible with Windows 7?

You are booting from the Windows 7 cd, correct? Not starting the install from within Windows XP?
