Black Screen Error

This has come up on my son's laptop. Is there a solution?

black screen error:

Windows failed to start. A recent hardware or software change might be the cause.

File: \Boot\BCD
Status 0xc000000f

An error occurred while attempting to read the boot configuration data.

Please help

Hello,
In safe mode, go to start->run, type in msconfig, and the system configuration window will come up.

First, try clicking on startup and say disable all, then say apply. Try restarting your computer and loading it normally, and see if it lets you get anywhere. If it does, you can go back into msconfig and start enabling startup items again until you find the one that is messing you up.

If that didn't work, try going back into msconfig, keep all the startup items disabled, and click on the services tab. check the box saying hide all microsoft services, then click on disable all, and hit apply. Try restarting into Windows normally again, if it works, then again, you have to figure out which service/startup items are affecting your boot up.

If that didn't work either, then you may have a graphics card issue. Where does it stop when you try to load Windows normally?

It stops almost immediately, I will try going into safe mode when I get home

what OS is he using...what is the make and model of his system...did he add any new hardware or software just prior to having the problem...what about updating windows or any other software...

OS = Vista home premium I think (definately Vista) Compaq Presario 6000

No he didn't add any hardware or software no updates to any software as far as I know

Hi Nigella,

Type 1: Reinstalling the Vista Bootloader to the MBR and Bootsector
Scenario
You've installed another OS after installing Windows Vista, so the Vista bootloader no longer appears/is-used when you reboot. Or you installed Windows Vista, and it failed to install its bootloader to the MBR.

Solution::

Run EasyBCD and go to the "Bootloader Management" window:


Select "Reinstall Vista Bootloader" from the first menu, then click "Write MBR"

Reboot to test. If it doesn't do the trick, move on to Type 2.

Type 2: Resetting the Vista Bootloader Configuration
Scenario
Your Windows Vista bootloader is incorrect or corrupted and so you can't boot into one or more Windows Vista entries. Depending on your situation, you may see errors about winload.exe, kernel32.dll, or other system files.

Solution
Boot into a working copy of Windows (be it XP or Vista), and run EasyBCD. Go to the "Diagnostics Center" page:

Select "Reset BCD Storage" then "Rescue My System" to begin recovery.

You'll see a dialog asking you for your boot drive - pick the letter of your Windows Vista drive, then hit OK to continue.

EasyBCD will reset your BCD data and re-configure your bootloader correctly.

At this point, you will only have one entry in the Vista bootloader - it'll be for the copy of Windows Vista installed to the drive you selected in the step above. Make sure you go to the Add/Remove entries page and [add whatever operating systems] you need to before you reboot.



Please try the above mentioned steps, and reply back.

thanks it rebooted and repaired :) just rebooting again, but it desn't seem to want to shut down....saying that it gone!!!!
and booted up ok again
