Hi all,

I can't believe the numerous daily up-dates I have been receiving from Microsoft since I cleaned my PC (removed two Trojans) and reinstalled Vista. Are all these up-dates really necessary? They are for Vista & for Office, and have all been high MB content..taking forever to download and intall.

Also, I have tried to adjust the system so that Microsoft can notify me of the new updates but not install automatically. However, they continue to send and install at will. What else can I do to overide that?

Thank you n advance for all you help. :)

Yes, system patches from Microsoft are critical as they patch things in Windows that improve (usually) reliability and especially security. Thats how a lot of machines get malware on them to begin with, being unpatched.

You can setup how it notifies you by going into the control panel and opening up Windows Update. It will never just install the updates automatically unless its set to do so.

This is what I’m doing..

1) Control Panel
2) Check for updates
3) Change Settings
4) From drop-down I check “Check for updates but let me choose when to install them”
5) CLICK “OK”

Then Windows asks “If you’ve started this action…., click to continue”, so I do.

Then I’m out of there thinking that it’s set to my specs, and it’s not as Microsoft continues to send and install at will.

What else can I do to overide that?

Try turning off UAC, restart, change the Windows update setting and turn UAC back on.

Worked like a charm. Thanks Diabillic!

I don’t have “PowerPoint”, “Excel”, or “Outlook” installed on this PC. Yet, they still keep sending me updates?? Why?

Perhaps you have a trial that you dont know about? Check under Programs and Features.

Nothing there. I’ve checked a number of times.
I do have the disc with all this stuff but I only installed “WORD”.

I just don’t get it.
