can't get itunes store to work

i keep getting the message "iTunes could not connect to the iTunes store. Make sure your network connection is active and try again"

i have no idea what to do. i've tried to uninstall and reinstall itunes and it didnt work. plus none of the websites i've looked at for help have made any progress.

PLEASE HELP!
