i only run a headset microphone off my soundblaster live! 24-bit soundcard, and i was able to hear everything--vids, music, flash animations, etc... i went out to eat, came back an hour later and now no sound... i did recently install OpenOffice 1.1.4 with the current security patches, but i'm pretty sure my sound was still working afterwards...

here's what i've done to try fixing this thus far--
1. i checked through hardware manager on the sound driver--says is working properly
2. went into sound settings and 'digital output only' was unchecked for some reason, so i re-checked that box, also made sure the soundblaster sound card was the default card used for audio..but still no sound even after restart
3. ran clean-up, restarted, still no sound
4. ran ABetterInternet adware remover--was clean
5. ran Avast! virus/worm cleaner--was clean
6. ran ewido security suite 3.0 plus scan--also clean
7. ran AdAare 6 and Spybot--also clean
8. ran PCBugDoctor--fixed shortcuts--still no sound
9. yes, the headset is plugged in securely, no wiggle-room or bad connection apparent
10. defragged all drives that needed it--still no sound...
11. contemplated doing a system restore to before the OpenOffice install, but wasn't sure if that would work as newly installed software seems to stick around even after i restore sometimes...

what could this be? my headset (a SENNHEISER PC150) isn't that old, maybe 6 months...
ANY ASAP help would be MUCH appreciated!

no, not muted... lol...
the last thing i did was burn a dvd--something i do about 5-6 times a day lately, and never have had problems from, ever... i'm thinking maybe my headset just died.. or maybe i should spring for another better soundcard... any suggestions?

do u have speakers or a back up head set, ear plugs for ur CD player or Ipod.. etc... plug them into ur soundcard check if there is sound.

Also check Winamp, Windows Media Player, Creative Surround Sound Mixer, makes sure all of those programs have their volumn on, and at the Max or w/e u want it to be at.

Check for updated sound card drivers.

Check if ur sound card is even plugged in, some games may not even run without sound, u will get an error like "there is no sound..... plz quit".

Also check device manager, to see if ur sound card is there.

i think that's about all i can think of

Hope this helps

Thanks
