Hi...

I'm having a problem with my DVD drive. It will not recognize DVD's anymore. It was just fine until about a week ago. I tried to run my Sims 3 High End Loft Stuff, which ran just fine 2 days prior. It just would not recognize that the disk was even in the drive. I tried CD's and they played just fine. Now, I've tried to install my Oblivion DVD game, and it is not recognized either. No DVD is recognized, but all CD's are playable.

I've checked for updates to the driver, there are none. I have Windows set to check for and update daily. I've updated and installed all patches and what-nots for the Sims3 games. .. I'm just stuck. Help please?

It looks like DVD read laser is gone.
You may need a new drive.

A cleaning may help, but if that doesnt work then Broni is correct the drive lens is dying/dead.

Thank you both for the help. I will buy a cleaning kit and see if that works.. otherwise, it's off to newegg.com for a new drive...
Thanks again!

Honestly, I tried cleaning kit at least 10-15 times and it never worked.
Since the cleaning kit costs $7-$8 and new drive can be bought under 30 bucks, in my opinion, cleaning kit is a waste of money.

Thanks for the info Broni...

I was just reading thru other things here... and I saw where some recommended uninstalling the drivers for the CDRom and then letting the computer re-install them, or going into regedit and removing the upper and lower filters then rebooting... might something like that work for this situation? {And, honestly, I have NO idea what upper or lower filters are!} Thanks again.

Hi spryte,

Honestly, if you're not sure what you're tweaking while editing the registry, it's best to leave it alone. One wrong move, and your system is fried like a Twinkie at the Texas State Fair. :)

Broni's advice is probably the best you're going to get. New drives are cheap and easy to install, and we're always here if you need help. :)
