Thanks Rowal5555. Tried the netsh winsock reset when the problem recurred last night, and I got the message "The requested operation requires elevation."

Googled it, and it seems like I need to run it as Administrator. Will try that again the next time the problem comes back.

Tried the netsh winsock reset as Admin, rebooted, but problem is still there.

The modem lights problem occured 5 times over the whole of yesterday, so I am really suspecting hardware failure.

Hope to find a secondhand Open Networks iConnect 622 modem in my area.

Btw, I had already checked for firmware upgrades for the modem and there were none.

Hi kneurotik.

I recently replaced my DynaLink RTA1025W modem/router with a NetGear DGN2000 so have one just lying around. The DynaLink is pretty good and has 4 cable connections as well as wireless and I think they are still making them.

PM me with your address and I will chuck it on courier for you. (Gotta have good internet or go crazy, LOL.)

To anyone who is still following this thread, here's an update.

I managed to use a different modem to troubleshoot what I suspected was a problem with my modem. Result: haven't been having any problems for a week!

Turns out it was indeed hardware failure after all.

Thanks to those who offered suggestions and help nevertheless.
