Sims 2 Crashes

I just recently replaced my hard drive and installed windows 7. I have installed Sims 2 but when I click on the icon to play it, I get the following pop up message:

"This application has crashed. The application will now terminate."

things that i have tried:

-reinstalling
-running as administrator which I now keep doing
-installed the sims 2 update patch
-run in windows xp service pack 3
-troubleshooted compatabilty

i'm at a loss and haven't seen anyone else with this issue.
