I have an HP Pavillion dv6904ca, using Vista. Last time I used my DVD player on my laptop was Saturday, everything was going fine. Now, it's not even recognized on my computer. There is no DVD/CD-rom drive listed in the device manager and there is nothing listed under Computer except for my two hard drives. I have no idea what happened, nor how to fix it. I asked my brother who can't figure it out either. I've restarted the computer, search for drivers...nothing. I desperately need help. Thanks.

Try this

Download CDgone to your desktop.

Right click and choose Extract All,
open folder and double click on cdgone.reg

Do Not Click on EditReg.reg

Restart your PC

If it is a desktop check the connections ...but could be the Drive has gone faulty

Try System Restore to a date when it was there

Restore PC to an Earlier Date & Time

Go Start>>All Programs>>Accessories>>System Tools>>System Restore

• Click in the radio button Restore My Computer to An Earlier Time
• Click Next
• Pick a Date in Dark Blue only (pick a date to before you installed All-In-One)
• Click Next
• Then Next again.

This should restore the PC to that time & date

It will update and restart

Actually, nothing's happening when I click System Restore. Nothing's coming up.

Usually, HP machine have a plastic piece that pops right out and the drive pops out after pressing it back in. Try that.

Also, look on the bottom of the machine. Look at the screw holes. There may be a picture of a CD next to 1 or 2 of them. If so, those screws hold in your CD-ROM. Take em out, pull the drive out, put it back in, screw the screws back in and power on the machine.

EDIT: Can you see the drive in the BIOS?

How do I see the BIOS? Is that during the start-up? If so, I'm not sure what button to press to allow me to see it.

Should I check the BIOS before getting the screwdriver?

I realize you tried cdgone but try the different steps listed below and see if one does the trick for you.

One of these may help:
1. Uninstall the drive through Device Manager.
Restart computer. The drive will be automatically reinstalled.

3. Download, and run Restore Missing CD Drive patch
Double click on cdgone.zip to unzip it.
Right click on cdgone.reg, click Merge.
Accept registry merge.
Restart computer.

4. Go to Device Manager, click a "+" sign next to IDE ATA/ATAPI Controllers.
You'll see two items:
- ATA Channel0 (or Primary Channel)
- ATA Channel1 (or Secondary Channel)
Right click on each of them, and click Uninstall. Confirm.
Restart Windows. They'll be automatically reinstalled.

This doesn't work because the Device Manager isn't detecting my DVD-rom, so there is nothing for me to uninstall.

This didn't work. It just said that it couldn't fix any problems because my CD/DVD-rom was not detected.

I did not see those items when I clicked on the IDE ATA/ATAPI Controllers.

I also took out the drive and put it back in. Nothing.

Forget CDgone. If your BIOS doesnt see your drive, Windows wont either. It's a hardware problem. If you took it out and put it back in, then either your CD-ROM is bad or the connector off the board it plugs into is bad. I would replace the CDROM, if the new one doesnt detect in the BIOS then your gonna either have to replace the mobo (expensive) or get an external USB CDROM.

Boo-urns. Of course things die when I can't afford to get a new one. Thanks. I really hoping it wasn't dead, that I could somehow fix it, but if it is...well that's not good.
