vista desktop freeze

at start up desktop freezes I have to go to ctrl alt delete then click cancel and the desktop will unfreeze I have reformatted hoping this would solve the problem did not help

you will need to run sfc /scannow...

for vista...
go to the run box and type in cmd
instead of hitting the Enter key press Ctrl+Shift + Enter You will be prompted with the obnoxious User Account Control dialog… but it will then open up a command prompt in Administrator mode...then type in sfc /scannow

NOTE THE SINGLE SPACE BEFORE THE /

No but I just ran it awhile ago and on start up no problem so will check it out for a couple of days andsee if it continues to work so at this time I want to thank you for the help

first run chkdsk...instructions are here...
if that doesn't fix the problem...run sfc /scannow

I ran both tests nothing was found and problem is still here its like a program is running but not responding as long as I go to task manger and click cancel and return to desktop it works fine. I deep scanned for a virus with avast nothing came up could it be a windows update that is causing this problem

click on start...in the search box...type in msconfig...continue...start up tab...
drag the bottom of the window down so that everything is showing and take a screenshot...post the screenshot for us

uncheck everything EXCEPT avast...reboot

sorry had to go out of town ok I stopped all except Avast no change so tried stopping Avast can not disable it
