I am in the final stages of successfully repairing my college daughter's Gateway laptop. It was presented to me as being "It had a virus and everything is wiped out". Sure enough, all I could get was a blinking cursor. That's all I know.

I got a set of recovery disks from Gateway and successfully installed them, with a new clean installation. So far so good. I went through the new programs and deleted most of the add-on junk that comes with new machines, such as MacAfee free trials, games, etc.

I did a Windows Vista update (104 updates and several re-boots!) and that seems to be working fine.

The only remaining oddball comes when the desktop appears. I get a black DOS window that says C:\WINDOWS\system32\cmd.EXE . After a while it goes away and everything seems to be fine.

Any ideas what might be causing that command window to come up?

I may upgrade the thing to Windows 7 when I get through this first big bunch of hurdles.

Thanks!

Please go to the malware forum and follow the instructions at the top....Especially the CLICK HERE.

That will give you several steps that will help you clean up 70 percent of all problems by yourself. If at the end of the process you are still having difficulty--and you may not be-- then post an OTListIt log in THAT forum.

Thanks for the fast reply. I am attaching a screenshot of the startup menu. For some reason I couldn't make the window any bigger.

The only programs I think I have added, since the reinstall, were Firefox, Defraggler, Microsoft Security Essentials, CCleaner and Malwayebytes. I think Adobe & Java were updated also. I ran CCleaner to clean it out and ran CCleaner's registry cleanup.

I think that's it.

I just added the startup menu from CCleaner.

I wouldn't think that it is malware, since this is a brand new reinstall, but what do I know? I was just reading another thread where it may be related to the reinstall.

Thanks again.

It's auditadmin.cmd. That's what's causing the command window to pop open on startup.

I would follow Rorschach112's advice and look at the Malware and Spyware Cleaning Guide. This will help you disinfect the majority of malicious software from your system. If that doesn't solve your problem, post a new thread in the Virus, Spyware and Trojan Removal Forum.

If you are still having problems after being given a clean bill of health from the malware expert, then please return to this thread and we will pursue other options to help you solve your current problem(s).
