Want to upgrade wife's Vista notebook to Win 7.

Have run adviser - everything OK except C: only has 12 GB free ... D: (Data disk) has 96 GB free.

Will upgrade work? Is there and way change the partition w/o reinstalling from scratch (notebook 1 yr old - came w/Vista)

Let's take a look at the partitioning on your computer.
  • Go to Start > Run.
  • Type in compmgmt.msc and click Enter.
  • On left side click on Disk Management
.
On right side you will see a visual depiction of the partitions on your hard drive. I need you to take a screenshot and attach it to your next reply.
  • To take a screenshot press Print Screen on your keyboard. It is normally the key above your number pad between the F12 key and the Scroll Lock key.
  • Go to Start > All Programs > Accessories > Paint.
  • Press CTRL+V to paste the contents of the screenshot into the paint workspace.
  • Go to File > Save As.
  • Save the file as a JPEG to your desktop.
Please attach the screenshot to your next reply.

I'm guessing Vista is installed on the C: drive. When you install 7, it's going to wipe all the info on the partition and install the OS over any present data. So it's not tat you only have whatever free space to install the OS; 43 GB is plenty of space.

Hope that helps! Let me know if there's anything else I can do to assist you. :)

Thanks again

Yes, Vista is still there. Wasn't sure if the space used for Vista could be counted for Win 7. (My PC - a desktop - also had Vista which I upgraded but there was >300 GB free so didn't think twice.)

Not a fan of Vista - at all ... so Win7 will be good.

Issued resolved.

Glad to hear this issue has been resolved. :)

Cheers! If there's anything else I can do, please don't hesitate to ask; just make sure to start a new thread in the appropriate forum. :)
