So, I recently just opened up my computer, put in the AC adapter in, and Open my laptop... As I play for about 20 mins, I checked my battery status on my computer and it said:

"Plugged in, Not charging
Battery life: 12%

and I wonder why it didn't charge... I tried taking the battery out and putting it back in and it still didn't charge... I tried the other way, disconnected the AC adapter and replug it but still didn't charge...

Any suggestions, what should I do?

Thanks...

This is either a battery problem or a charger problem.
What do you mean by "opened up my computer"?

I have the same problem. I tried using another adapter from a different computer and it charged so for me it's a bad adapter, otherwise it might be a problem with your computer.

Some laptops, like mine, have a switch on the bottom. It has a battery on one side and a plugged in plug on the other. Flip over your computer and see if it's turned to the battery.

Did the above fix not work, or simply isn't applicable?

Edit: Try looking here for some support.

I don't know... but it is kind of awkward because it charges then it doesn't and then it goes back to charging... I left the computer on while it is plugged and before i left... it did not charge, but 15-30 mins later, it started charging again... I don't know what the problem is so... if you can still help me, I'd appreciate it...

Hi Extreme930,

How old is this battery? 2-3 yrs is about average for a laptop battery, though the lifespan of a battery can be lengthened greatly with a good battery maintenance program. I've "heard" of them lasting up to 10+ yrs!!

When you took the battery out, did you dust off the inner casing where the battery plugs into? Do this to ensure that it is making a connection.

Most people don't realize it, but you should never use your battery while the AC Adapter is plugged in. That will overcharge the battery and shorten its lifespan. That's probably the #1 reason the battery dies too soon! Below is a link to help educate you on Battery Maintenance.

http://www.laptop-ba...atterytips.html

Do you have the battery icon displayed in your notification area near the clock? If the battery status says it is plugged in an not charging, I would say the battery is on it's last leg!! If the icon does not show it being plugged in, it could be that the AC Adapter has a loose wire in it somewhere. They do take a beating! You can check this by using a VO meter as I have on mine in the past. Or, it could be the port itself. The port is connected to the motherboard and there is a wire that connects the two. If this is loose, you will have to take it to a Tech Shop and have it fixed unless you are computer savvy at taking laptops apart and can solder.

Hi Extreme930,

Battery Maintenance pertains to how you maintain your battery. The following are basic rules that I follow to prolong the life of my battery.

How to maintain your battery

Charge your laptop's battery to its full capacity before first using it, unless it has already been fully charged by the manufacturer.

Unplug your laptop, and run it on battery power to discharge the battery once a week or every other week.

Run the battery down to almost 0 percent. This will help extend the battery life, believe it or not.

Pay attention to power loss. If you find that your battery power drops suddenly from a high percentage to a low percentage, get a new battery. It has lost its ability to hold a charge.

Wrap your battery in a towel and store it in a cool, yet dry, dark place when you use your AC Adapter. Fully charge it before storing it.

Tips & Warnings

A heavily used battery will probably require replacement in about 18 months. Be prepared to buy a new one if you rely heavily on your battery.

Keep a spare battery on hand if you rely on battery power a great deal. Might save you from losing your work!

Batteries that don't charge to 100 percent are probably starting to have issues with recharging. It will probably need to be replaced soon.

If your computer manufacturer issues a recall for your battery, do not hesitate to send it back for a replacement. You don't want your laptop melting down on you, and that's meant in the literal sense. People can and have had their laptops melt or explode because of defective batteries.

Use your laptop on a raised surface, such as a book to prop it up, or a portable desk made especially to keep your laptop cool. Batteries can get very hot, and if your laptop cannot vent properly, it can cause problems with the processor.

Also, here's a link for Power Management in XP Laptops. Please, read it thoroughly.

How old is your battery? Do you have a habit of using the laptop with the AC Adapter plugged in while the battery is also plugged in and fully charged?

You may have overcharged it to the point where it can't hold a charge! Does the laptop run ok without the battery and just the AC Adapter? Please try that for awhile and let me know.

What type of battery is it. Is there a model # on it somewhere? Provide that for me. I may be able to search, to see if it has a tester of some sort built in. Mine doesn't. :)
