I already had Malwarebytes installed. Since it wasn't cleaning up the problem I'm having, I decided to use "Remove Program" and reinstall it. This was not a good idea. I downloaded Malwarebytes and ran Mbam-setup.exe. I got all the way through the installation, clicked Finish, then I got the error MBAM_ERROR_UPDATING (12007,0,WinHttpSendRequest) (message attached). The Malwarebytes software executes a scan with no errors, but if I click "Check for updates", I get the error again. I never got this error with the previous installation. I also tried installing in safe mode.

Hi

Welcome to Geekstogo. I'll be helping you with this problem.

  • Please read all of my response through at least once before attempting to follow the procedures described. I would recommend printing them out, if you can, as you can check off each step as you complete it. If there's anything you don't understand or isn't totally clear, please come back to me for clarification.

  • Please do not attach any log files to your replies unless I specifically ask you. Instead please copy and paste so as to include the log in your reply. You can do this in separate posts if it's easier for you

Firstly, please follow all of the steps in this section of the Malware Forum, then please post the MBAM, GMER and OTL Logs in this thread.

Thank you for responding. Things got worse this morning. I must have visited a site that gave me another virus. I can’t run ANYTHING now. I tried to run TFC and got the message

Application cannot be executed. The file tfc.exe is infected. Do you want to activate your antivirus software now?

I get the same message for anything I try to run. The exe file name changes with the application.

I am writing you from another pc.

I was able to run the programs by starting them just as the desktop came up.

I did:
TFC
ERUNT
Malwarebytes found a couple infections, which it cleared. I am unable to provide you with the log, as you must click on the log file to open it. The virus is stopping me from running most things, including Notepad.

I have AVG. I tried to install Microsoft Security Essentials. I got it to start executing, but it failed while trying to install. It stated that there was an error and it had to stop. I didn’t uninstall AVG first, because I was concerned that I might wind up with NO anti virus software. Would Security Essentials have installed if I had uninstalled AVG? (I would think it wouldn’t make any difference).

I was able to run GMER. Here is the log

  • Download TDSSKiller and save it to your Desktop. If you can't do this, come back to me and I'll talk you through a safe method of transferring it via another PC
  • Extract its contents to your desktop.

Please download OTH.scr to your desktop

Double click the OTH file and select Kill All Processes, your desktop will go blank. (You may need to restart the system and quickly start OTH as soon as the desktop becomes visible.)
Posted Image
Then select Start Misc Program - a browse window will open.
Navigate to your desktop and start: tdsskiller
  • Once completed it will create a log in your C:\ drive
  • Please post the contents of that log

I cannot access the internet, therefore I cannot download anything directly. What I've been doing is downloading from another pc (the one I am writing you from) to a flash drive, copying the download to the desktop on my infected pc, then running it from there. I can do the same later today with the two downloads you just requested.

Do you consider my method of getting the files from another pc "safe"? Do you have another suggestion?

That's fine, but we need to ensure that your flash drive doesn't pick up any infection, so follow these instructions first in a clean PC

  • 1 - Flash Drive Disinfector
Download Flash_Disinfector.exe by sUBs from here and save it to your desktop.
  • Double-click Flash_Disinfector.exe to run it and follow any prompts that may appear.
  • The utility may ask you to insert your flash drive and/or other removable drives. Please do so and allow the utility to clean up those drives as well.
  • Wait until it has finished scanning and then exit the program.
  • Reboot your computer when done.

Note: Flash_Disinfector will create a hidden folder named autorun.inf in each partition and every USB drive plugged in when you run it. Don't delete this folder...it will help protect your drives from future infection.

TDSSKiller.exe scanned many files. The screen now reads (and I'm manually transcribing this):

File "C:\WINDOWS\system32\DRIVERS\ftdisk.sys" infected by TDSS rootkit...will be cured on next reboot

Completed

Results:
Registry objects infected / cured / cured on reboot: 0 / 0 / 0
File objects infected / cured / cured on reboot: 1 / 0 / 1

To finalize removal of infection and avoid loosing of data program will reboot your PC now.
Close all programs and choose Y to restart or N to continue

------------------------

I have not taken any action. I await your instructions.

Did you select Y & reboot, if not, please reboot.

then..

ComboFix
Download ComboFix from one of these locations:

Link 2
Link 3

* IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop

  • Disable your Antivirus and Antispyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools
  • Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.
  • As part of its process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.
  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.

**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue its malware removal procedures.

Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

Posted Image

Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.

When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply.

Below is the log file you requested.

About your instruction "Disable your Antivirus and Antispyware applications", I have AVG. I know you do not recommend AVG, but as you may recall, I could not install Microsoft Security Essentials at the time you recommended it. I cannot figure out a way to disable AVG. Should I just do a Remove Program?

Also, I have Ad-Aware 2008. From what I can tell, it only runs when I run it. There is an option to schedule a scan, but I have never set that up.

Just to give you an update: Things seem to have improved on my pc. I do not get the bogus messages asking me if I want to activate my antivirus security. Also, I seem to be able to execute everything I've tried on the pc. An existing problem is in my browser - what ever web site I go to gives the message "The proxy server is refusing connections"

I don't see it. There is no arrow at this time. I only have four icons - volume, Quick time, HP DIgital Image Monitor, and Safely Remove Hardware. I went into Taskbar setup and unchecked Hide inactive icons. It didn't make any difference.
