I am trying to bring my old gateway back to life but I have hit a snag. I had put a simple version of Windows XP on it a while ago but it was simply not able to run it smoothly and I left it alone for a while. Now I am back to it and trying to still 98 back on it from a bootable CD that I burned but when I try to do so it does not bring up the command to boot from CD even though I select the CD-rom as the first bootable object. Furthermore I am getting the error message "media test failure, check cable" and I have no idea what that means.

Where did the Win98 come from?

I select the CD-rom as the first bootable object.

Is this during post or did you go into the bios and setup the boot sequence?

"media test failure, check cable" and I have no idea what that means.

This could be a hardware issue or the burned cd as you stated.
