Laptop is running REAL hot lately

My laptop has started to run VERY hot! The fan seems to run at high RPM all the time, where as it did not before. Right now I show 97 processes running, 16% CPU and Physical Mem. is 54%. My Laptop specs are : Windows Vista x64, AMD X2 2.1, 4gigs DDR2.

My question is...Is there an application that I can run to find out what is causing the laptop to work much harder all of a sudden to cause it to be so hot. Or why? And possibly change or remove to help?

How is the laptop used? Where is it used? Is it used on a bed?
If so, please don't use it on the bed, on the sofa or anywhere that blocks up the vents on the bottom of the laptop, otherwise it will get hot.
