computer wont play DVD

MY computer will play CDs on the media player 9, but for some reason when I put a DVD in to play it act's like nothing is going on at all.It will read that there's no disk in drive.Can this be fixed?

is this a dvd-rom drive? dvd will not read in a normal cd-rom

top says compact disk,and bottom saysCD recordable /rewriteable
