printer connection between vista and win 7

have a printer that is connected to my Vista pc. Have another pc that is win 7 and am trying to get it to share the printer. it sees the printer but will not connect to it. i KNOW THERE IS SOMEONE WITH A SIMILAR ISSUE! I was thinking of putting the printer straight to the win 7 to see if it downloads the software then back to the vista and trying again. Think that may work? I must not be without a printer all together, and am a little nervous about doing this.
