hi,

I recently just finished cleaning up the smitfraud/blue screen display problem, with the help of GTG. But I'm still having problems running windows update and shutting down my computer - I've no idea if they are related.

Regarding shutting down, ive followed the windows troubleshooter, disabling services then re-enabling them one by one. No problems shutting down for any of the services - as long as I just load up the computer then shut it down. The problem arises if I start either internet explorer or AOL - if I have done this, when I shut down the computer it just hangs - and shutting it down via task manager gets me to the "windows is shutting down" screen, but it doesnt turn off.

As for windows update, the web page will just not load. The guy helping me with the smitfraud problem suggested I may need to uninstall and re-install sp2 - if so how do I go about doing this?

Please help!
thanks
Jon

Greetings Jon,
Here is the step by step to remove SP2 from XP. :tazz:

As far as the 'Shutdown' issue, there are many causes for this. Why don't you do the Service Pack first. Then if the problem still exists we'll tackle that after.
Here is some info that will help with the 'Windows Update' issue.

Why can't I download updates?
Lift All Update Restrictions by downloading and running this regfile. For Permission issues read this article.

To get the updates to re-appear and/or to be listed as available again. Go to Start/Run/CMD and type in:
del /q "%SystemRoot%\System32\Catroot2\Edb.log. Then try again.

Can't download any updates and/or you receive an error message: Go to Start/Run and type in: regsvr32 wintrust.dll. If that doesn't help: Go to Start/Run and type in CMD. At the command prompt, type the following commands, pressing ENTER after each line:

net stop cryptsvc
ren %systemroot%\system32\catroot2 oldcatroot2
net start cryptsvc

Or run this script, then try the install again.

Correct the Cryptographic Service Error Message
Another issue: When you use the Windows Update scan feature, the scan quickly reaches 100%, and then displays the "There are no updates available at this time" message. To correct this:

Verify that your computer's date and time are accurate and that the Internet Explorer language option is not empty.

To check the language setting in Internet Explorer:

1. Click "Tools" and then choose "Internet Options"
2. Click the "Languages" button
3. Make sure at least one language is listed in the "Language Options" dialog.

If the above hasn't helped: Go to Internet Explorer/Tools/Internet Options/Connections/Lan Settings and uncheck: Automatically detect settings.
