Hi,

So, my brother in law who has never used any AV/anti Malware in his life has been getting the following error when starting up his vista laptop:

"Windows Disk Diagnostics Tool will scan the system to identify performance issues"
Followed by "Check hard drive sector" and "Check file system integrity"

Finally

A problem with the hard disk has been detected. Recommend downloading .....

Not sure if this is a dead hard drive or a virus, any ideas would be appreciated. I cant do anything with his computer, I am doing writing this on my laptop, Many thanks.

That is an infection

Download aswMBR.exe ( 511KB ) to your desktop.

Double click the aswMBR.exe to run it

Posted Image
Click the "Scan" button to start scan

Posted Image
On completion of the scan click save log, save it to your desktop and post in your next reply

THEN

Download OTL to your Desktop
  • Double click on the icon to run it. Make sure all other windows are closed and to let it run uninterrupted.
  • Select All Users
  • Under the Custom Scan box paste this in

    netsvcs
    %SYSTEMDRIVE%\*.exe
    /md5start
    explorer.exe
    winlogon.exe
    Userinit.exe
    svchost.exe
    /md5stop
    %systemroot%\*. /mp /s
    CREATERESTOREPOINT

  • Click the Quick Scan button. Do not change any settings unless otherwise told to do so. The scan wont take long.
  • When the scan completes, it will open two notepad windows. OTL.Txt and Extras.Txt. These are saved in the same location as OTL.
  • Post both logs

No problem we can get around that -- Do you have access to another computer with a CD burner ? If so we will work outside of windows.

Please print these instruction out so that you know what you are doing

  • Download OTLPEStd.exe to your desktop
  • Download this scan.txt file to a USB
  • Ensure that you have a blank CD in the drive
  • Double click OTLPEStd.exe and this will then open imgburn to burn the file to CD

  • Reboot your system using the boot CD you just created.
Note : If you do not know how to set your computer to boot from CD follow the steps here
  • As the CD needs to detect your hardware and load the operating system, I would recommend a nice cup of tea whilst it loads :D

  • Your system should now display a Reatogo desktop.
Note : as you are running from CD it is not exactly speedy
  • Double-click on the OTLPE icon.
  • Select the Windows folder of the infected drive if it asks for a location
  • When asked "Do you wish to load the remote registry", select Yes
  • When asked "Do you wish to load remote user profile(s) for scanning", select Yes
  • Ensure the box "Automatically Load All Remaining Users" is checked and press OK
  • OTL should now start.
  • Double click the Custom scans and fixes box
  • In the dialogue locate the scan.txt you have on the USB
  • Press Run Scan to start the scan.
  • When finished, the file will be saved in drive C:\OTL.txt
  • Copy this file to your USB drive if you do not have internet connection on this system.
  • Right click the file and select send to : select the USB drive.
  • Confirm that it has copied to the USB drive by selecting it
  • You can backup any files that you wish from this OS
  • Please post the contents of the C:\OTL.txt file in your reply.

OK lets start - on completion of the OTL fix reboot to normal mode to run the other two scans

Start OTLPE as you did previously from CD
Copy the attached Fix.txt to a USB

  • Insert your USB drive with fix.txt on it
  • Start OTLPE
  • Drag and drop fix.txt into the Custom scans and fixes box
  • If you cannot drag and drop for some reason. Then press the Run Fix button and a dialogue box will pop up asking for the location - select the file on your USB drive
  • Then click the Run Fix button at the top
  • Let the program run unhindered, reboot when it is done to normal mode if possible
  • Then post a new OTL log ( don't check the boxes beside LOP Check or Purity this time )

THEN

Please read carefully and follow these steps.
  • Download TDSSKiller and save it to your Desktop.
  • Extract its contents to your desktop.
  • Once extracted, open the TDSSKiller folder and doubleclick on TDSSKiller.exe to run the application, then on Start Scan.

  • If no reboot is require, click on Report. A log file should appear. Please copy and paste the contents of that file here.
  • If a reboot is required, the report can also be found in your root directory, (usually C:\ folder) in the form of "TDSSKiller.[Version]_[Date]_[Time]_log.txt". Please copy and paste the contents of that file here.

FINALLY

Posted Image Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware from Here.

Double Click mbam-setup.exe to install the application.
  • Make sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select "Perform Quick Scan", then click Scan.
  • The scan may take some time to finish,so please be patient.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When disinfection is completed, a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to Restart.(See Extra Note)
  • The log is automatically saved by MBAM and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
  • Copy&Paste the entire report in your next reply.
Extra Note:

If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts, click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process. If asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately.

I think his computer has more than just a virus problem. At the log in page it comes up with "The User Profile Service failed the logon, User Profile cannot be loaded". I think he has had a go at trying to fix his computer before hes given it to me.

So I have run the fix in OTL, attempted to login normal mode but can't get past that screen. (I imagine trying to sort this remotely is like pulling teeth), Its frustrating enough for me, ?twice as bad for you!!!!

Can you achieve safe mode on this system ?

If so try Last Known Good option

If that fails then try safe mode as Admin and then try to create a new user profile

Yes Safe mode is accessible on the problem laptop, tried the LAST KNOWN GOOD option, ends up at the user login screen which tells me its failed. His laptop does not have an option to access safe mode as administrator (sorry if I am missing something obvious, which is highly possible)

In safe mode do you have the option to create a new user ?

Once in safe mode go to All Programs > Accessories
Right click the command prompt and select run as administrator

In the elevated command prompt, type the command in bold below and press Enter.

net user administrator /active:yes

You will get the message, The command completed successfully. If not, repeat the step.

Then close the command window
Select Log Off
This should then bring you to the admin logon screen
Log in

Then create a new account
Once done reboot the system to this account and we will work from there

Essexboy, thanks for all your efforts, he has had enough of it, hes going to take it in for repair. I personally think its a bit silly but he is fed up with me having his laptop (the impatience of youth. I think we were finally getting somewhere but there you go. I will donate a couple of quid for your patience and your help.

Cheers.

the impatience of youth

Ahh been there, done that, got the book and read the T shirt :D

No problem at all - although I hope he has backed up his data as repair shops usually just wipe and re-install

But at least you may have learnt a few tricks :D
