Ciao!

My boss asked for my help in cleaning up one of their laptops. I don't have the full backstory, but I know that their kids have been allowed to use this compuper. It only has one login, obviously with Administrator privileges. (I'm going to address this and other preventative measures with them after it's [hopefully] all cleaned up.)

If you take a look at the attached screen shot, you can see the top almost half of the IE window is taken up with toolbars.

A look through Control Panel at the Programs list revealed somewhere in the neighborhood of a large handful of programs that, when I researched them, turned out to be bad news.

Oh - the OTL log will show "google.com" as the IE home page, but before I manually changed it to Google (mainly to see if it would stay after I changed it) it was the conduit.com Conduit Engine as the home page.

In the short time I've been using this laptop, I've not seen any obvious signs of anything else "crazy" like redirects.

OTL log follows:

Hi Moonpie,

Welcome to Geekstogo. My name is Salagubang and I'll be helping you with this problem.

  • Please read all of my response through at least once before attempting to follow the procedures described. I would recommend printing them out, if you can, as you can check off each step as you complete it. If there's anything you don't understand or isn't totally clear, please come back to me for clarification.
  • Please do not attach any log files to your replies unless I specifically ask you. Instead please copy and paste so as to include the log in your reply. You can do this in separate posts if it's easier for you
  • English is not my first language, so please do not use slang or idioms, as this makes it difficult to understand for me.

Removing modern malware infections often requires making changes to the registry, and a corrupt registry can prevent a system from booting. Compatible with Windows NT, 2000, 2003, XP, Vista, 32 & 64-bit versions. To ensure that we have a valid registry backup. Install and run ERUNT (Emergency Recovery Utility NT) which will allows you to store a complete backup of your registry and restore if needed.
  • Download ERUNT
  • Double-click erunt_setup.exe to run.
  • Follow the prompts and install using the default configuration (setup language, install location, shortcuts...).
  • Say No to the portion that asks you to add ERUNT to the start-up folder, if you like you can enable this option later.
    Posted Image
  • Start ERUNT
  • Choose a location for the backup
The default location C:\WINDOWS\ERDNT\[today's date] is preferred
    Posted Image
  • The first two check boxes are ticked by default (System registry and Current user registry).
  • Press OK
  • When prompted, click YES to create a new folder.
  • Progress bars will show backup status.
  • A confirmation window will popup when complete. Click OK to close.

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Please download ComboFix from one of these locations:

Bleepingcomputer
ForoSpyware
  • Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools. (Click on this link to see a list of programs that should be disabled. The list is not all inclusive.)
  • Double click on Combofix.exe and follow the prompts.
  • As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.
  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.
**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, or if you are running Vista, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.

When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply.

Hoy Salagubang! Kamasta ka?
(I apologize if I got that wrong - please correct me!)

I appreciate your help.

I ran ERUNT. I was not supposed to post any log from ERUNT, was I? I can next time if need be.

Below is the log from ComboFix.

Salamat!

Hoy Salagubang! Kamasta ka?
(I apologize if I got that wrong - please correct me!)

I am doing quite well, thank you. :D What gave it away?

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Here is your next instruction.

Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware from Here or Here

Double Click mbam-setup.exe to install the application.
  • Make sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select "Perform Quick Scan", then click Scan.
  • The scan may take some time to finish,so please be patient.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When disinfection is completed, a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to Restart.(See Extra Note)
  • The log is automatically saved by MBAM and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
  • Copy&Paste the entire report in your next reply.
If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts, click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process,if asked to restart the computer, please do so immediatly.

next

Download AVPTool from Here to your desktop

Run the programme you have just downloaded to your desktop (it will be randomly named )

First we will run a virus scan
On the first tab select all elements down to Computer and then select start scan
Once it has finished select report and post that.

Posted Image

Do not close AVPTool or it will self uninstall, if it does uninstall - then just rerun the setup file on your desktop

Now an analysis scan
Select the Manual Disinfection tab
Press the Gather System Information button
Once done Open the last report saved folder then attach the zip file to your next post zip
The file is located at C:\Users\your name\Desktop\Virus Removal Tool\setup_9.0.0.722_05.01.2011_20-34\LOG\avptool_sysinfo.zip

Hoy Salagubang!

I am doing quite well, thank you. What gave it away?

Well nothing gave it away for sure, but "Salagubang" plus "San Jose Del Monte" as your location made me 'assume' that you are Filipino. I can't speak Filipino, so I looked up how to say a few words/phrases, which is why I apologized (in case I "said" it wrong). So if I try any more Filipino and I use it incorrectly, please know that my intention is good and please forgive & correct my mistake(s)!

---
Back to the issue at hand....

- I downloaded & ran Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and it seemed to run correctly. [MBAM log is below]

- I downloaded & ran AVPTool. I started the first scan last night, but I forgot to set the laptop to never hibernate. So it did hibernate with the scan about 25% complete. After "waking" the computer this morning, the scan started back and had no problems until 74% complete - at which point it "stalled" on the file "C:\Windows\assembly\PresentationCore.dll". It was stuck on that file for about 30 minutes, so I finally clicked "Stop Scan". [I attached a screen shot showing what it looked like just before I stopped it.] I then clicked "Start Scan" intending to start over, but it gave me the option to continue where it left off. I chose the "Continue" option, and it seemed to work - it started back at 74% complete and I could see it was no longer stuck on one file. It finished the rest of the scan in about 20 more minutes. [AVPTool report is below]

-----> Do you think the scan stalling, then me stopping & resuming the scan will be an issue? Should I re-run the scan from the beginning?

- As you can see from the screen shot and the report, the first AVPTool scan found some items which it appears were not automatically deleted. Your instructions did not say to click "Delete" or do anything else about any Alerts, so I did not do anything. Do I need to do something about that?

- I ran the AVPTool Manual Disinfection analysis scan. [AVPTool system info .zip file is attached]

Salamat!

How is the machine running?

Hoy Salagubang!

Sorry for the delay - I've not had much down time to post.

Well, when I got the machine it already had all this junk on it; plus I've never had a Windows 7 machine, nor have I ever had a laptop. So I don't have anything with which to compare in order to tell you if its running better.

When I got the computer, the browser was not being redirected nor did it seem slow or anything like that. I just saw lots of toolbars in IE and links on the desktop that said "Free Games!" and "Click here for..." (whatever). So I just figured there were some "nasties" on the computer.

Since you directed me and I did - exactly as told - all the steps, the computer seems to be running the same. However, when I opened up IE soon after your last post, there were at least two toolbars: Free TV Toolbar & ToggleEN. And when I right click at the top of IE, there is also a choice for Conduit Engine toolbar.

So I just did a search in Windows for "conduit" and I got 129 hits. Many of them are .gifs and there are other files, too. And many of them were last updated on 01 April 2011 or 31 March 2011, which is after we did all these steps.

So my question is: are these toolbars just "bloatware" that I can manually delete/remove and they will stay gone, or are they malicious and we need to go deeper to get rid of them?

At this point I must confess the following:

- I still had to use this machine for work, even while we were trying to go through all these steps.

- I was intending to wait until we cleared everything before adding a user account to the Windows login, so I haven't done it yet. So the only login has Administrator privileges.

- I have to do some web searches as part of work, but I don't think I clicked on any "bad" links

- There is a 64-bit version of IE on this machine that doesn't seem to have the toolbars on it, so I use it as often as I can; but I know nothing about the 64-bit version so I don't know if that is good or bad.

Salamat!

That looks like that may have done it!

Toolbars are (currently) gone when I open the (non 64-bit) IE.

Do I need to do anything else in Control Panel or anywhere else?

Please see OTL log below.

Maraming salamat!

Hi Moonpie,

Thats it, the machine is clean. :D

You may visit the Control Panel > Add/Remove programs and uninstall anything that you will not be using.

Lets wrap up.

We need to remove all the tools that you have used.
This is so that should you ever be re-infected, you will download updated versions. It will also remove the quarantined Malware from your computer.

Remove ComboFix
  • Click the Start button
  • Click Run...
  • Type Combofix /Uninstall in the run dialog box and click OK
Posted Image

Remove Other Tools
  • Download OTC to your desktop and run it
  • Click CleanUp! to begin the cleanup process and remove our tools, including this application
  • You may be asked to reboot the machine to finish the cleanup process - if so, choose Yes

You may manually delete any remaining clutter from your desktop.

Lets Re-hide system files and folders.
Opening Windows Explorer (to get there right-click your Start button and go to "Explore"), please do the following:
  • Go to Tools (drop-down menu at the top of the window)
  • Go down and click Folder Options
  • Click on the View tab
  • Find the Hidden Files and Folders section of the box and check "Do not show hidden files and folders"
  • Again under Hidden Files and Folders, find "Hide protected operating system files (Recommended)" and check it (if it's already checked)
  • Click Apply, and then Ok at the bottom.
  • Close the window

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Maintaning your computer

Download TFC to your desktop
  • Open the file and close any other windows.
  • It will close all programs itself when run, make sure to let it run uninterrupted.
  • Click the Start button to begin the process. The program should not take long to finish its job
  • Once its finished it should reboot your machine, if not, do this yourself to ensure a complete CLEAN
THEN
  • Download Flush Flash from Here and follow the easy to use instructions on the same page
NEXT

Defrag the harddrive

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Other things to keep in mind

Windows, Java, and Adobe products should all be kept up-to-date on a regular basis so the latest security fixes are in place on your computer. Please refer to the following links on how to manage these products.

Here are a few other applications you might consider. Keeping your temporary file area clean, your Windows registry backed up, and backing up your important data are all good techniques.
  • Flush Flash - by Bobbi Flekman - cleans Flash Player cookies
  • ERUNT (Emergency Recovery Utility NT) - a registry backup utility
  • Cobian Backup - a very good backup utility - read the tutorial here
  • WOT, Web of Trust, warns you about risky websites that try to scam visitors, deliver malware or send spam. Protect your computer against online threats by using WOT as your front-line layer of protection when browsing or searching in unfamiliar territory. WOT's color-coded icons show you ratings for 21 million websites, helping you avoid the dangerous sites:
  • Green to go
  • Yellow for caution
  • Red to stop
WOT has an addon available for Chrome and Opera.
Please remember that just having these programs is not enough. You must use them. Running a full spyware scan weekly, a full virus scan monthly, and checking for updates and cleaning your temporary files periodically is very important in keeping your computer in tip-top shape.

Finally, please take the time to read the following articles. Applying this information will help prevent future infections:

This article will help you understand how you may have gotten infected:
How did I get infected in the first place?
