Hi labradollie
Your profile lists your OS as XP but you have started your topic in the Vista and W7 forum, please confirm which OS you are using so that you can be offered the appropriate advice.
Things to consider, is the laptop still covered by warranty, can you start in safe mode, do you have the installation disk/s that came with the laptop and have you had any form of malware attack, see info below;
If you suspect your system may have a malware issue I suggest you check out the self help guide at the malware forum http://www.geekstogo...cleaning-guide/ if after following the guide you believe your system may still be infected you need to start a new topic there and not post any malware logs on this forum as they are not used here, provide them with a link to this thread to show them what if any steps have been taken.
Once you get the all clear from the malware guys if the issue is not resolved return here and someone will assist you.
Couple of things that you can try are removing the AC adapter, the battery and the Ram and them hold down the power on button for 30 seconds, this will dispel any static charge that may have built up in the system, attach the laptop to an external screen via the VGA port and check the display quality, you may need to toggle between screens by using the Fn and F5 keys to achieve this.
Starting in safe mode;
XP: http://www.microsoft...e.mspx?mfr=true
Vista: http://windows.micro...er-in-safe-mode
W7: http://windows.micro...er-in-safe-mode

thank you!
ah, I'm so sorry about that! thank both of you so much, but I can't get Internet access on that computer. no, I don't believe I've ever has to do system restore since last year-ish. I tried system restore at an earlier date but it still had the same problem, I'm not sure what's wrong with it. I will try all of this
