Pioneer DVD-RW DVRKD08L won't read or write just ejects disc

Previously working PIONEER DVD-RW DVRKD08L ATA device on my Toshiba A305-S6825 laptop now will not read nor write. When a disc is inserted

the drive spins and the light on the door flashes but after 20 to 30 seconds the disc is ejected and the screen displays the message: "Please

insert a disc into drive D:". This occurs whether I insert a blank disc to burn a CD or a disc containing music I want to listen to. However,

if I insert a DVD it works perfectly. Anyone have an explanation for this and/or know if there is an easy fix?
