Hi,

What happens is that I save a Notepad file and when I want to open it the next time it doesn't look like a text file, and it gives me some 'illegal instruction' message.

This happens about 5% of the time, but this time is especially annoying since I don't have the time to redo the research I typed up in this text file. I attached some screenshots.

Your help would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Di

Open Command Prompt, then type this in, press Enter after each line:
cd \Users\Gloudina\Desktop
ren REGENE~1.COM report.txt

While saving, remember to select the file type as "text file", not "all files".

Thanks so much for your quick response, devper94! (And your Eng is good - what language do you speak?)

I think I did what you said I should, but my Vista didn't find the file - by the way, my Search function
on Vista hasn't been working for a while.

I'm sending you another screenshot, when you can look at it, thanks.

Could you do it again, but replace the "ren" line with "dir /b"? I cannot see the full file name.

Thanks, I did it again as you told me and I got a list of the files/folders
on my desktop without the one I'm looking for. Now this file has simply
disappeared off my desktop (I hadn't touched it in the meantime).

If you have an idea of what happened plse let me know for me not to repeat
this error - I've taken note of your advice about saving a text file as .txt.

Let me know if you think I should just do the research again.

Cheers,
Di

Did you see anything like "report.txt"?

Can you show me the output of that command?
