[stands]

Having tried a number of things I am now struggling to find a way of preventing this laptop from freezing (just after boot up) or running painfully slowly. The laptop isn't mine and I was asked to have a look at it so unforunately don't knowte history of when these issues started happenng.

Things I have done already are; system restore, removed a number of unusd programs (although struggling to remove Sophos), msconfig (and unchecked all the star up programs), checked for malware using malwarebytes (nothing was found),run ccleaner through and I have tried to install AVG but with no success.

The laptop boots up fine but within seconds slows down to snails pace, making typing or any process difficult. It works fine in both the safe mode settings and this is how I am able to access this site.

Try running the Disk Defragmenter as it may simply be that the data on the hard drive is heavily fragmented which does slow down Windows considerably if it's very bad. Start >> All Programs >> Accessories >> System Tools >> Disk Defragmenter

Thanks for your reply. Can't believe I didn't try defrag!!! It took over 24hrs to do, though, so maybe explains the state it was in lol

Not been able to get rid of Sophos off through the add and remove, although it just seems to be sitting there atm doing nothing. so casually ignoring that now I've added AVG on as an alternative so hopefully fully protected.
