for anyone still perplexed by this forget software, system does not get far enough for that. It is caused by defected sata firmware, not necessarily on boot disk. Took a while to pin it down to a defective Hitachi hard drive which even though, with the help of spare computer, has been formatted and dskchecked for errors prevents SATA bus for functioning whilst present at boot time even with no software on it
