All significant stuff began yesterday:

1. First, couldn't print from Verizon email until three tries. Very slow.

2. Then, upon starting up later, got the following Windows File Protection message: "Files that are required for Windows to run properly have been replaced by unrecognized versions. To maintain system stability, Windows must restore the original versions of these files. . . . Insert your Windows XP Professional CD2 now." (I have XP Media Edition.)

3. Now, whenever I turn on printer, McAfee asks to scan, & scan turns out OK. But it sees the printer as foreign.

4. Ran Malwarebytes scan; everything OK.

5. Tried to run McAfee full scan. Took ~ 10 min. to scan 1% of files. (Scan found no infection.) Tried to close McAfee and couldn't. Had to do a hard reboot.

6. When I started up, got Dell Support window out of the blue. First time I can recall in five+ years. Declined software.

7. Somewhere in there, tried to access my G2G account for first time since opening it in 2008. G2G would not let me change password after approximately five tries.

8. Tried again to run McAfee full scan, letting it run for four hours. Got only through 18% of files. (Scan found no infection.) When I tried to stop scan and close McAfee, computer froze and again had to do a hard reboot.

9. Starting up, again got Dell Support window. Declined.

10. Also, somewhere in there, tried to open a new Gmail account to use for downloading software recommended by G2G's "How did I get infected in the first place?" Tried four times, but Gmail would not let me; kept saying I was under age (ha!).

11. Unsuccessful at using (downloading) SpywareGuard & SuperAntiSpyware. Nothing seems to work right.

11. This is the first apparent uncaught infection in three years, during which time I've had McAfee and have been scanning with free Malwarebytes several times a week.

12. Obviously, I'm no geek. Am taking week off work to do financial stuff for mom with Alzheimer's, and this ain't helping! Would be so grateful for good advice!
