Hi all,

I have a dell e310,winxp, sp3. Lightning struck cable outside, cable co. replaced modem. Router #1 port remains green with nothing attached. Wireless to laptop working. Pro 100 nic card replaced with Trend card 10/100/1000 gig. However Pro 100 nic is on motherboard. 2 PCI slots, one has firewire card and other phone modem. Do not use phone modem, took it out and installed Trend card. Installed hardware first then card started up and had hard time with renewing ip but then got ip address. Still cannot connect to IE. Diagnostics state: Error attempting to validate the winsock base provider:2. Not all base provider entries could be found in the winsock catalog. A reset is needed. Network adapter status is connected. FTP errors 12007 connecting to passport.net and hotmail?? Never use hotmail and do not knw what passport is.

I ran malware and spyware programs that you recommend. Found some adware. Went back to a differnt restore point- still nothing.Tried netsh int ip reset. Does not reset.

Also, in add and remove did remove old nic card but it still shows in network places - disabled. Removed modem in add and remove. Ran diagnostics for Trend card found and everything passes but an IRQ conflict shows failed. (resource is conflicting with other device.

I also believe after running VEW that I have a multitude of other software issues.

Please help.

Thank you.

Start, All Programs, Accessories, Command Prompt. Type with an Enter after each line in the code box:

ipconfig /flushdns

netsh  winsock  reset catalog

netsh  int ip reset reset.log

(I use two spaces in the code box so you will be sure to see where 1 space goes.)

Reboot

That might fix your winsock. IF it does see if you can get the time to update:http://www.xp-tips.com/time-synchronisation.html

Then:
1. Double-click My Computer, and then right-click the hard disk that you want to check. C:
2. Click Properties, and then click Tools.
3. Under Error-checking, click Check Now. A dialog box that shows the Check disk options is displayed,
4. Check both boxes and then click Start.
You will receive the following message:
The disk check could not be performed because the disk check utility needs exclusive access to some Windows files on the disk. These files can be accessed by restarting Windows. Do you want to schedule the disk check to occur the next time you restart the computer?
Click Yes to schedule the disk check, but don't restart yet.

Start, Run, eventvwr.msc, OK to bring up the Event Viewer. Right click on System and Clear All Events, No (we don't want to save the old log), OK. Repeat for Application. Reboot. The disk check will run and will probably take an hour or more to finish.

Start, Run, sfc /scannow, OK

SPACE after sfc. This will check your critical system files. If it asks for a CD and you don't have one or it doesn't like your CD just tell it to SKIP.

Start, Run, sigverif, OK

Press Start. This will check your drivers. If you just get a few when it finishes tell me what they are. If you get a lot just look for those with newish dates (since about the time the problem started.)

1. Please download the Event Viewer Tool by Vino Rosso
http://images.malwar...om/vino/VEW.exe
and save it to your Desktop:
2. Double-click VEW.exe
3. Under 'Select log to query', select:

* System
4. Under 'Select type to list', select:
* Error
* Warning

Then use the 'Number of events' as follows:

1. Click the radio button for 'Number of events'
Type 20 in the 1 to 20 box
Then click the Run button.
Notepad will open with the output log.

Please post the Output log in your next reply then repeat but select Application.

Ron,

Thank you for responding. Had a friend come over not sure exactly what he did but most of the problem was my router. Had a lightning strike the broadband underground wires outside and did numerous damage. Winsock was fixed and i purchased new router. Everything is up and running fine again.

I thank you so much for your help and I recommend your site often and also the software recommendations that your site offers.

Thank you again,

Annette

I'm not so sure of our advertised software if that's what you mean. I'm not a big fan of registry cleaners and the like and last time I looked at the ads that what they were pushing. Once you log in they are supposed to go away but even if they don't I use Firefox with the Adblock Plus extension so I never see them.
