I recently switched from internet explorer to firefox, i was looking at thier section about add-ons and extensions and i came across a download named flashgot. I downloaded the program but i'm unsure about what the purpose of the program is. The program stated that you needed to have a download manager i'm new to all this so i was looking to see if anyone here knows about the program flashgot. And how do i get a download manager? i download songs but i didn't know that you could have a download manager. thanx in advance :tazz: ;) ;)

Hi polling.

First of all Firefox has it's own download manager built in. ;) click Tools and then Downloads to access it. For my purposes it is not the best download manager in the world. I have dial up and Firefoxes Download manager is slow. I and many like me use an external download manager. In my case I use LeechGet which is considerably faster for me than is the internal download manager of firefox, Opera, or Internet Explorer. While I have been very satisfied with LeechGet, I've been considering trying another just for the heck of it. In particular, I think I would like Fresh Download.

Now to get to FlashGot. FlashGot is an Firefox extension that enables Firefox to use an exterier program like LeechGet or Fresh View instead of it's own internal download manager. As such it is not an extension you need unless you wish to integrate an exterior program into Firefox to manage downloads for you instead of using Firefoxes internal download manager. Despite the fact I use leechget alnost exclusively I don't use the FlashGot extension. Thought about it, but I already have more Firefox extensions than a person needs. Probably will try it one day tho.

Note:

In order to use this extension, YOU REALLY NEED AN EXTERNAL DOWNLOAD MANAGER. FlashGot was born only to integrate Firefox with external download manager programs: it's quite logical that if you have no one installed, FlashGot won't work!

See http://www.flashgot.net/whats

I hope this clarifies the issue for you. :tazz:

If you install a Download manager such as LeechGet or Fresh Download Then Yes. leechGet is 2 to 3 times faster than the internal download manager of either firefox or IE. This has been my experience using dial up!! Sometimes very rarely leechGet fails to work right for a particular Download, the file is corrupt when completed. But life's like that. Flashgot just enables you to use another download manager from within firefox. By itself flashgot doesn't do anything. You must install a download manager first in order to benifit from flashgot. and how well or fast you can download using it would depend on the particular download manager you install. Is that clear?

If I remember right LeechGet tries to install itself into your Windows start up. That's not necessary so I don't allow that. To manage startup in windows I recommend
  • StartUp Control Panel Startup Control Panel is a control panel applet that allows you to easily configure which programs run when your computer starts.
But whichever download manager you decide to use research it first to be sure it is not spyware and to be sure it works right. I mentioned LeechGet because I use it and am satisfied, it's also free. Otherwise I'd use something else. :tazz:
