A friend asked me to look at his laptop. It was working fine then just shut off. Now when the power button is pushed it briefly starts to boot then goes to a black screen with a blinking cursor in the upper left corner. Tried getting it to safe mode but all it will do is make a high pitched beeping noise. Tried taking out the battery and holding power button. Still nothing. It is a HP Pavilion with Vista.

Thanks

Hello, and welcome to Geeks to go !
What is the model # please.
Your friend gave you the Laptop because he / she was experiencing the same issue correct?

Tried getting it to safe mode but all it will do is make a high pitched beeping noise.

So the only time you hear that high pitched beep sound is when you actually depress the F8 Key Is that correct?

Some motherboards do have circuitry to warn if overheating occurs and will alarm. Usually you would hear that alarm on a regular restart try without pressing keys.
Usually when a Laptop shuts down it's 9 times out of 10 a heat issue. Are the vents clear on the side of the Laptop and not clogged up?

What disks do you have available.

It had been off for a few hours before I started trying to fix it. It happens if I push any f keys when it boots.

You could consider borrowing a Vista disc or Win7 disc and booting from it and there is a repair option on the disc that may help, if it is in fact a windows file issue. Also on a working Vista or Win 7 you can create a basic repair disk, by click Start > control panel > "backup an restore" on the left pane you will see "Create System Repair disc"

It's a shot in the dark, no guarantees.
