compaq labtop stuck in sleep mode

my son has a compaq labtop thats stuck in sleep mode. This is the second time it has happen. When i turn it on the blue lights come on the fan turns on but the screen stays black. Then all it does is blink on and off nothing ever showa on the screen. What do i do since I cant get the screen to show anything.
