I am running Windows 7 and the ONLY problem I've had since I got this system is this issue.

Windows has recovered from an unexpected shutdown

A problem caused Windows to stop working correctly. Windows will notify you if a solution is available. (never got a message from windows about a solution, so that will probably never happen)

This happens quite often and then when I reboot, I have to actually hit F12 to go to the boot menu and manually hit the enter button so the machine knows to boot from OS.

That message = very likely a BSOD.

Any dump files in c:\windows\minidump?

If so, copy them to Documents, zip them up and attach to your next post.

there are 6 .dmp files in there, but I'm not sure what you mean for me to do with them. did you want them opened and copied and pasted into a document file.
or just zip the 6 of them up and post them with my next entry?

Yes.

But you will need to copy them out of \windows\minidump to zip them up.

okay, feeling stupid now ... figured out how, but get an error message that says I'm not permitted to upload that type of file ... does it HAVE to be a zip file?

Just stepping in to say that the instructions below may be easier for you.



Download BLUESCREENVIEW and install and run it to read the dump files created by windows.
Double click on BlueScreenView.exe file to run the program.
When scanning is done, go Edit>Select All.
Go File>Save Selected Items, and save the report as BSOD.txt.
Open BSOD.txt in Notepad, copy all content, and paste it into your next reply.

Would you please tell me which antivirus applications you have had previously on this machine any and all.The reason I ask is because some like to hang around after you uninstall via add remove programs and require the use of removal tools.

Just DONT us the registry cleaner function of CCleaner unless you know what you are deleting exactly!!

Then open ccleaner hit the tools button then startup second one down below uninstall then in the bottom right hand corner of ccleaner hit save to text file.Save it to your desktop and post the startup.txt here in your next reply.


Hit the start button in lower left hand corner. Then in the run box type msconfig, then hit the services tab then put a check mark in hide microsoft services what is listed there,after hiding microsoft services?Please post back to us in a vertical list.

Please download MINITOOLBOX When the box opens click save file, save it to the desktop and run it.

List Installed Programs
List Users, Partitions and Memory size
Click Go and post the result.

BlueScreenView named a Microsoft OS winsock driver, which is a default and not the probable cause.

3rd party networking related drivers should be looked at as suggested by rockmilk

Check Device Manager for wifi & Ethernet driver names, then see if updates are available -

Hit start button at lower left hand corner of the screen.Then in the run box type services.msc. Find the service listed below,one at a time. left click it once you should have the option to either stop the service or restart it , stop the service then right click selected service select properties then change the startup type to manual then left click apply and move on to the next service.If the service is stopped and the startup type is manual then do nothing.

Please download TFC by Old Timer and save it to your desktop.

Save any unsaved work. TFC will close ALL open programs including your browser!
right-click Run as Admin on TFC.exe to run it.If tfc doesnt prompt a reboot then do so manually.

I completed all of the above, but don't know what you mean by latest crash file.

After I ran all that stuff ... for some reason I still have to hit F12 to go to the boot device 'page' to hit enter so that it boots from the C: drive. If I fail to hit F12 then the screen goes black with a blue fringe and then I have to manually reboot ...
