I set up a workgroup in xp, but clicking on it says it's not accessible. I shared one folder. Once I'm able to view the share in xp, I'd like to work on making sure ubuntu is able to see it too. Then I'd like to share ubuntu's folder with xp.

Network magic somehow fixed it for xp: I can now see both ubuntu and xp shares. The problem remains on ubuntu's side. After disabling ufw, I was able to enter windows network to see computers (prior to that it said "Unable to mount location: Failed to retrieve share list from server"), but now upon clicking on xp, it says the same thing.

Once I get this fixed, I'd like to reenable ufw, but I need an explanation of the needed allowed rules: is it in or out, and why.

Apologies for you having waited for a reply.

I have only posted - really so that you do not think you were overlooked.

I use Ubuntu on this computer as a dual boot with Vista, HOWEVER I have never explored the answer to what you are asking, so all I can offer is the article here.
https://help.ubuntu....PUnderQemuHowTo

scroll down to sharing or see the right hand side menu.

and the Uncomplicated Firewall - albeit again I have it simply set to default
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/UFW

One of the great benefits I have found with Ubuntu is the extremely extensive Ubuntu Help forums.
There are a few Ubuntu specialists on GeekstoGo and if you cannot find the answer in the links I have sent I will ask one of them to have a look at your thread.

Sorry again that you waited for a reply.

I appreciate the reply and would indeed also appreciate if you could ask them for help, as those links really weren't helpful.

When the trial of Network magic expired it stopped working on xp, and now I don't see ubuntu's shares.
Thanks

Is this YOU please, as the posts read more or less the same.

As if it is, what immediately comes to my mind is that when the free trial expires

When the trial of Network magic expired it stopped working on xp, and now I don't see ubuntu's shares.

it will of course stop working. So unless I am missing the point and I APOLOGISE if I am, if that was the free trial of the CISCO software - Network Magic - is the answer NOT as suggested to start again with the
recognised procedure for Ubuntu in the links provided.
Again unless I have it wrong, it will NEVER work whilst you have the configuration invoked in the free trial.

IF I HAVE misread the situation, I again apologise.
However it seems to me best to continue for the present time with the comprehensive suggestions in the Ubuntu Help forum.
which I mentioned in my post

and of course you were already aware of.

PLEASE DO NOT HESITATE to return if the complete resetting of the

Share files and folders with other computers
procedure using the terminal and the cmd as shown does not produce a result.

You don't have to apologise. Network magic doesn't do anything special, it just does the configuration on its own. Yes, those are my posts; feel free to peruse the information I have posted there. Your links don't really help, and I have already read through and tested standard suggestions, to no avail.

Sorry for not making it clear I actually meant the links provided in Ubuntu Help - not the one I provided
Here is another one

and the full guide from Ubuntu

It was indicated that seeking a solution from ubuntu's end will yield no results: "You've pretty much exhausted everything you can do on the Linux end so until you figure out what's wrong with your XP install I'd stick with Dukto." (http://ubuntuforums....=1902537&page=7) Thus it must be done by analysing xp's configuration.
