i did a clean install of windows 7 today but noticed i have no sound on my onboard audio. bios just says ac97. no sound coming through the headphones when plugged in. i have a red x on the volume icon. upon trouble shooting it said driver not installed. the motherboard is a elitegroup C51GM-M. where can i find the driver for free and is it compatiable with windows 7 or do i need a sound card and would that work?

After you install the OS, you MUST install the necessary drivers for your motherboard. These are included with the utilities disk that came with the motherboard, or you can download the latest from the motherboard's webpage. Yours are located here.

And does it still say driver not installed? Any errors in Device Manager? Did you reboot after installing them?

Why did you have to re-install Windows in the first place? And while the integrated sound should be enabled by default, you might check the BIOS Setup menu to make sure it is still enabled. Finally, verify you have connected the speaker connections correctly.

You are also missing quite a few M/soft Updates.
Please correct this side of the problem first, as you cannot say you have all drivers and updates without this.

Go to M/soft updates, but you should have the computer set to Auto Download Updates, (which seems unlikely in your case) -

Hi -
I just missed your post as I was putting this together for you -
This usually means the drivers are not installed or are well behind in their updates
Uninstall the drivers and then click Install (or Reinstall) all those items that have the marks beside them.

Your printout still shows DirectX 9 installed -
DirectX - Support 9.0c
I have just checked my Windows 7 SP1, and found DirectX 11 should be installed now with SP1.

http://windows.micro...Windows-updates - Install Windows updates in Windows 7

http://windows.micro...ating-on-or-off - Turn on Automatic Updates

According to Realtec (your speaker card maker) this has been offered as a fix, after a reinstall - -
Open Realtek manager then plug your speaker lead into the front headphone socket and your speakers should start working.
Obviously you need a CD playing, and at the same time an info box will pop up.
This box will show a list of line in/line outs and have a tick against the Headphone entry.
This proves that Realtek is working. If it's still not working then I can't help you, but if it is: file:///C:/PROGRAM%20FILES/AZTOOLS/smilies/smile.gif

One last hopefull link

A bit hot here today (over 100F about 40C) so I will be off line for most of the rest of the day

Regards -

after quite a few uninstalling the drivers and reinstalling them it finally installed using the vista drivers before i read your last reply. at first when running the ac 97 drivers it would shut down during the middle of the installation. this may be due to not having all the windows updates. thank you so much for all your help. most appreciated. issue has been resolved. please close this post.
