My daughter has a HP Notebook and the otherday when she went to boot it she got the error below:
Pri Master Hard Disk:S.M.A.R.T. Status BAD Back up and Replace
Press f1 to resume.

When you hit F1 the sytem boots to windows but you can not do anything. To shut it back down I had to do a hard shutdown.

Any suggestions?

At this point I am not worried about an of the data on the machine, just want to get it running again.

Signs that the HDD has or is about to fail, see http://www.smarthdd.com/en/ then;

Run hard drive diagnostics http://www.tacktech....ay.cfm?ttid=287

Make sure, you select tool, which is appropriate for the brand of your hard drive.
Depending on the program, it'll create bootable floppy, or bootable CD.
If downloaded file is of .iso type, use ImgBurn: http://www.imgburn.com/ to burn .iso file to a CD (select "Write image file to disc" option), and make the CD bootable.

NOTE. If your hard drive is made by Toshiba, unfortunately, you're out of luck, because Toshiba doesn't provide any diagnostic tool.
