: Hi all,
I have a problem with my ubuntu box 10.10.
I think the problem is with OS but I'm not totally sure.

What's happened: few days ago, I connected my new ereader with the usb cable. After I finished copyng the files, I disconnected the ereader in a not safe mode (simply diconnected the cable without "ejecting it from the OS).

After this event, very often I'm not able to boot my PC, obtaining this message:

"Reboot and Select proper Boot device or Insert Boot Media in selected Boot
device and press a Key"

I'm not sure if this is something related to BIOS or OS.

If I "play" with my usb devices - connecting or disconnecting them - usually the computer can boot again. I can't reproduce in an exact way the problem.

Any idea about how to solve this problem?

Thank you and sorry for my not so good english... :)

Do any of your USB devices show up as hard drives?

The reason I ask is that I've had this same issue happen with an older version of Ubuntu. What was happening was that USB hard drives were getting enumerated before my internal drives were and so GRUB through my USB Hard Drive was the boot drive.

A temporary work-around was to unplug the USB drive during boot and the permanent fix was to upgrade to the latest version. That's how I fixed my issue.

The other thing you can do is check your BIOS settings and make sure your internal harddrive has a higher boot priority than USB devices.

FIRSTLY - as orginal post is OVER one month old, I apologise that your request for help was missed. Occasionally due to the vast number of posts on the site, one does get overlooked. Thankfully this happens only VERY seldom.

Once you get in, Accessories, Terminal prompt
and run
 •
To refresh the available devices and settings in /boot/grub/grub.cfg
 • sudo update-grub
To look for the bootloader location.
 • grub-probe -t device /boot/grub
and if necessary to install GRUB2 which is used on your Ubuntu

To install GRUB 2 to the sdX partition's MBR (sda, sdb, etc.)
 • sudo grub-install /dev/sdX
To recheck the installation. (sda, sdb, etc.)
 • sudo grub-install --recheck /dev/sdX
Either as said, GRUB now thinks for some reason that the ereader is now the boot device OR you have a failing hard disk.
THIS is risky as of course are all cmds at root on a terminal, just as with windows at cmd prompt.

You could boot, get back in and try System Testing - see if that will find it
OR see this
https://help.ubuntu....d64/rescue.html

which of course you will see is in some respects the same as using the terminal in the root cmd of sudo grub-install
