Hello Philpower,
OK, if you want me in the BIOS, I will have to power off and reboot. This is what I was afraid to do. Now, what does MBs stand for? What am I looking for? I have never been in the bios before.

The next item is making the recovery disk at Artellos. Reading Artellos' documentation, it shows that XPProSP1 and XPProSP2 are two different selections. Remember I have XPHomeSP3, not the Pro version. Is this O.K.? Tell me which one I should choose. I will do as you instruct. Thanks, Mm

Hi

OK, if you want me in the BIOS, I will have to power off and reboot.

Use the reset button instead, you have no other option Im afraid as you cannot leave the computer permanently on and with no display.

Now, what does MBs

Motherboards.

Check the link I have provided to help you navigate through your BIOS http://www.hiren.inf...bios-boot-cdrom
Remember you are looking for Restore Default Settings.

You require both Sp1 and Sp2, using Xp pro is fine

OK, now I have the screen almost back--in safe mode only. The accelerator slider was reset automatically by the reboot. However, after booting out of safe, I got BSOD with reference to ATI. I did another boot and it automatically went into the boot menu. Selected safe again, looked around to see if settings were still the same--they were. Restarted again. Same result: BSOD, mention of ATI. I am going to use safe mode to remove the updates we discussed at the START of this episode. I am also going to remove the Acer files I installed trying to upgrade things to the new monitor I was actually using. Once I get these things off I will look for MB default setting in BIOS. I will report back on progress or other developments. Or do you want me to make another attempt at Overdrive before checking BIOS?

I think I have some misunderstanding of the difference between 'adapter' and 'driver.' Is adapter part of the hardware of the machine and driver part of the software?? Or something else? I keep reading about 'adapter driver' Is this two different things or two names for the same thing? I thought when I used the Acer (or any) CD, I was installing software and also the device's driver and adapter. Please set me straight. Regards, Mm

That is correct, the reference to ATI suggests that you need to install the driver for you video card/chip.

What are your video card or chip details so that I can look for the correct drivers for you.

Hello Philpower,
I believe my situation is developing into something beyond my ability and the time required to devote to finding a resolution. My neighbor upstairs has volunteered to take my unit to the repair shop and have XP reinstalled. I did this about three yrs ago and was pleased with the result. I think this is probably my best option.

I want to thank you for all the time you have devoted to helping me. All is not wasted as I have learned quite a lot. Obviously, my knowledge and experience with computers is limited. When I was born, Elizabeth was just a twinkle in George's eye. Well, allllmost.

So we will consider this topic answered and closed. My very best wishes to you and yours. Regards, Michel
