slow performance of vista laptop (HP dv5)

Dear Friends

I am missing the old performance of my laptop...it has become real slow and gets hanged at times ...this happened after a botched installation of a software and system had to be restored...also cpu usage goes up to 100% often indicating some useless process are running... kindly help
