HI everyone,

thanks in advance for helping. Here is my problem:

After about 10 minutes of playing graphics intensive games (Warhammer 40k: Space Marine and Half-Life 2, for example) the game freezes and I hear the last half second of sound repeated over and over again. The game never comes back and eventually the computer restarts. Once a BSOD popped up, but it never went past 30% of dumping the memory, so I rebooted after 5 minutes. There is no minidump file.

Drivers are up to date (according to SlimDriver), Windows is up to date, RAM test was positive, chkdsk and sfc came up with no errors. Never installed an AV other than MS Essentials.

Any ideas?

Download BlueScreenView
No installation required.
Double click on BlueScreenView.exe file to run the program.
When scanning is done, go Edit>Select All.
Go File>Save Selected Items, and save the report as BSOD.txt.
Open BSOD.txt in Notepad, copy all content, and paste it into your next reply.

Thanks to Broni for the instructions and program

Will do!

Btw. I stand corrected. The latest crash produced a BSOD and a minidump file:

OK now we are getting some where. Please do the following:

Please Run the PCPitstop.com OverDrive Full Tests

Here's how:

You must use your Internet Explorer for this procedure. (doesn't work so well in Firefox or others). If your machine is running Vista or Windows 7, you must Select IE to “Run as Administrator”. After completing PCPitstop OverDrive you can close your IE browser and re-open it Normally so that you are no longer running as administrator.

Go to: http://www.pcpitstop.com
Click on "Free Computer Check-up" listed below PC Pitstop OverDrive
In the User Login - Click on "Sign up FREE!"
You'll need to submit a valid email address and create your own password, then click - Create Account(button)

Now enter your email address and password to Log in, Select - Scan this system Now!(button)
You will then be asked to download an ActiveX component and allow it to install.
It is safe and does not compromise your privacy.
Follow the on-screen prompts to install the ActiveX and to allow the Full Tests to be run on your machine.

The Full Tests take about 2 1/2 - 3 minutes on most machines.
When complete, a Results - Summary - Recommended Fixes will be displayed.

Please post the URL internet address, from your Results, back here into this Topic Thread so that we can review the configuration and present performance levels of your machine.

Note: During the graphics 2D and graphics 3D testing, your screen will display some rapidly moving objects.
If you are sensitive to visual flashing, it may cause dizziness. Therefore, look away from the screen during that portion of the testing.

After reviewing the results we will be more informed and may be able to provide better recommendations for you to work towards improving your machine's performance.

While PCPitstop does offer a variety of Paid Products, the PCPitstop OverDrive testing is FREE. Please ignore the references to Paid Products. We prefer to provide manual solution instructions that you can apply directly to your machine.

Best Regards

Here is what OverDrive had to say:

http://pcpitstop.com...?conid=24812128

Edit: defragging right now!
Edit2: I looked over the report more closely and it seems to only have touched the Intel graphics chip (I have a hybrid intel/nvidia optima chip). I might be able to force the nvidia chip to kick in during the test. Should I?

According to PC PitStop none of your drivers are out of date. That would indicate a faulty driver somewhere.

Tutorial for running chkdsk in Vista\Win 7 located HERE.

I ran chkdsk again and again no errors.

Is there an easy way to track down the faulty driver, or do I have to reinstall them all?

Edit: headed to bed, so don't think I'm not responding because I've given up :-)

Never installed an AV other than MS Essentials.

That's all you need - other than an occasional supplemental scan just to make sure (I use Malwarebytes's Anti-Malware (MBAM) though it has never found anything MSE missed).

Shutting down after a few minutes of heavy tasking is a classic symptom of heat problems - an inherent problem for notebooks. Have you checked your temps? Have you cleaned out all the cavities, bays, vents and slots of heat trapping dust?

rshaeffer61 - I re-ran sfc and again no errors.

Digerati - yeah, I was thinking it might be heat build up, but the vents are clean and I'm using the laptop propped up, so that air intake and exit ports are unobstructed. Is there a way to monitor heat while in-game, or have a program running in the back that reports temp in a log file or something?

Thanks again for all of your help!

Download Speedfan (The download link is to the right), and install it. Once it's installed, run the program and post here the information it shows.
The information I want you to post is the stuff that is circled in the example picture I have attached.
To make sure we are getting all the correct information it would help us if you were to attach a screenshot like the one below of your Speedfan results.

To do a screenshot please have click on your Print Screen on your keyboard.
  • It is normally the key above your number pad between the F12 key and the Scroll Lock key
  • Now go to Start and then to All Programs
  • Scroll to Accessories and then click on Paint
  • In the Empty White Area click and hold the CTRL key and then click the V
  • Go to the File option at the top and click on Save as
  • Save as file type JPEG and save it to your Desktop
  • Attach it to your next reply

Also just to verify the temps please run the next program also.

Please download and run Hardware Monitor
Installation (setup version only)
HWMonitor is a hardware monitoring program that reads PC systems main health sensors : voltages, temperatures, fans speed.
The program handles the most common sensor chips, like ITE® IT87 series, most Winbond® ICs, and others. In addition, it can read modern CPUs on-die core thermal sensors, as well has hard drives temperature via S.M.A.R.T, and video card GPU temperature.
