Okay, so I seem to have some spyware embedded in my system. Everything else on my PC is running a-okay but the browser. My fast speed connection has slowed to a snail;s pace and my svchost seems to be takling up way too much RAM.

I have run spybot, spyhunter and ad-aware, as well as downloaded Spywareguard to help protect my PC in future. But the problem is of course embedded. Only thing is that I don;t know how to unwind the suckers.

Any help would be appreciated.

Perhaps your system resources are over tapped with startup files... run msconfig and uncheck all pgms not related to av, firewall or spyware..

Start>Run>enter "msconfig" -> select Startup tab... all files with a checkmark are gratuitously loading into your system. Get rid of 'em!!

If there are several files with checks (>10), you will likely have a noticeable improvment in your system performance. If your still have problem, reply and we'll graduate to spyware 201.

Thank you,

I did have a alot of programs checked in the start up (>15) such as Nerocheck, nwiz, itunes and other media-type programs that I have unchecked, leaving just the spyware and antivirus (AVG) programs running, as well as the nv's.

Everything is still running extremely slow with even the simplest web pages taking their time in appearing.

What's your recommendation doc?

Thank you (this site is gold!)

I have remedied many troubles on my PC (cleanup freed over 3gigs of space on my hard drive), but I still think my browser is not operating near the speed my connection allows.

Any further suggestions?

Thanks,
Foxoff

ps - can't begin to explain how happy i am that there are sites such as this one on the net.

Hello,

This is my hijack log. The browser is still running like a fat man up hill.

I believe this is the next step to correcting the problem - after trying all the others steps.......

Yours patiently and thankfully :tazz:

Hi Foxoff,

You HiJackThis appears to be clean.

Lets run another program to verify that there is nothing hiding.

* Please click this link to download Silent Runners.
* Save it to the desktop.
* Run Silent Runner's by doubleclicking the "Silent Runners" icon on your desktop.
* You will see a text file appear on the desktop - it's not done yet, just let it run (it won't appear to be doing anything!)
* Once you receive the prompt "All Done!", double-click on the new text file on the desktop and copy that entire log and paste it here.

*NOTE* If you receive any warning message about scripts, please choose to allow the script to run.
For some time it will look like nothing is happening. Just keep waiting.
Once it's done it will create a log. A window will come up telling you when it's saved.

Post the Silentrunners Log here please :tazz:

Hi Foxoff,

Lets try this.

Download rkfiles http://skads.org/special/rkfiles.zip and unzip the contents to a new folder on your desktop.

Go to My Computer->Tools->Folder Options->View tab and make sure that Show hidden files and folders is enabled. Also make sure that the System Files and Folders are showing/visible also.
  • Next:
  • Open HiJackThis
  • Click on the configure button on the bottom right
  • Click on the tab "Misc Tools"
  • Check off the 2 boxes next to the Box that says "Generate StartupList log"
  • Click on the button "Generate StartupList log"
  • Copy and past the StartupList from the notebook onto your post
Reboot into safe mode.

Restart your computer and as soon as it starts booting up again continuously tap F8. A menu should come up where you will be given the option to enter Safe Mode.

Run RkFiles.

Please Post log from RKFiles and also the startup list

Thanks,
Excal

Hi there,

I don't know if I did this correctly. I have my posted new startup list log file. But I cannot find the RK File log to post. I rebooted into safe mode and ran strings.exe file, but cannot find the log file. Rookie error I think, but do you mind pointing out where I went wrong?

Also the two boxes in startup were already checked off so I left them unchecked.

Thanks for your patience.

Foxoff

Hi Foxoff,

I hope this will clear up your confusion.

Make sure the 2 files (strings.exe and RKFiles.bat) are in a new folder on your desktop.

Run RKFiles.bat.

after it is done, look in C:\log.txt for the log.

Thanks,

:tazz:

Hi Foxoff,

It appears that your system is clear of Malware. I am PMing another staff member who might be more familiar with connectivity issues and maybe be able to help you.

in the mean time:

Great job, it appears your computer is clean :tazz:

Now that your system is Malware Free, it is important to reset your system Restore. Click Here to learn how to.
Might I suggest the following Free Spyware programs for added security, you can download them at the following links. These programs work great for detection:

Ad-aware SE

Spybot S&D

If you are unhappy with your current antivirus and want to replace it or if you dont already have one, I suggest this Free program:
*Note - do not use more than one anti-virus program as it will more than likely cause conflict.

AVG

The following free programs are great for prevention:

SpywareBlaster 3.4

Spywareguard

IE/Spyad

A Firewall is a must! Here are 2 good free versions:

Sygate

ZoneLabs

There are other options other than Internet Explorer for a browser, which some say have better security. Two of them are:

Firefox

Opera

This site is a great source for tightening up security on Internet Explorer settings.

Make sure that you keep your Operating System and IE updated with the latest Critical Security Updates from Microsoft...they usually come out once a month, on the 2nd Tuesday of each month.

Be sure and give the Temp folders a cleaning out now and then as well, Make sure after you clean your Temp files to empty out your Recycle bin as well.
For ease use the following program:

Cleanup
Run "Cleanup" and when it has finished, Reboot

To help prevent future spyware installations/infections, please read the Anti-Spyware Tutorial and use the tools provided.
