My IE8 has suddenly started hanging on "Connecting" and will not connect at all. I have a good connection for mail etc, so line is working good.
I have cleaned out temp internet files, history, etc. Reset all IE settings to default. Checked that Proxy server box is not ticked in LAN settings. Run Malwarebytes which returns clean result.

Cannot think what has caused this as I have not made any changes, it just happened at opening of IE.

System is XP Pro.SP3 and Office 2003 Pro SP2 .

Help would be very much appreciated.

Hi bar457,
Does Internet Explorer function correctly when opened as Internet Explorer (No add-ons)? You can check this by:

  • Click the Start Orb
  • Click All Programs
  • Click Accessories
  • Click System Tools
  • Click Internet Explorer (No add-ons)
Please let us know.

I might try uninstalling IE8 using the directions below,

Then reinstall from here.

Thanks Joe, but as I cannot get "connected" to get online, I guess you are going to advise how I download IE8 again once I uninstall it?

I'm late and have to run. I guess you don't have another browser installed like firefox to try?

Try booting to safemode with Networking see by chance if you can connect there, press the F8 key during restart, at the advanced boot options menu, use the arrow key to select "Safemode With Networking"

See if it connects, back later today.

No it did not connect in Safe Mode with Networking.

I decided to try System Restore, as clerly something had happened to cause the problem. Bingo, IE is now working fine again.
There is nothing as odd as computers!!

Many thanks

Great news! Glad it's working.

I would consider downloading a second browser like Firefox so you have an extra browser to use in case something like this occurs again.
