Hi,

I have a Synaps Monitor Model MW9BBK (if that helps).

Since I got it I haven't been able to turn the monitor on if there's no signal (i.e. power it on before I've pressed the power button on my computer), but lately when I boot up or switch profiles, the screen goes black (but green light indicating it's on stays lit) and won't come back on until I turn the monitor off and back on again.

I tried attaching a different monitor to my computer and during the boot up process and when switching screens, it displays 'no signal' but comes back on when there is picture/signal.

So basically, when there's 'no signal' my monitor goes black and won't come back on (even if there is signal) until I power the monitor off and then back on again.

It's more of an annoyance than anything else, but I'm worried it's a symptom of a bigger problem.

Does anyone know what could be causing this and how to fix it (without playing with the internal workings of my monitor, I'm a little nervous about opening it up)?

Thanks in advance :)

:welcome: Samantha Lee
If I am understanding you correctly what you are describing is normal regarding the no signal to the monitor until you power up the PC, the computer generates the images to be displayed by way of either an add on video card or a video chip that is integrated into the MB, both require power from the PSU (power supply unit) and display drivers which are accessed from the HDD (hard drive) which again requires power from the PSU which unless faulty should only activate when you press the power on button on your case.

Please provide information about your computer, is it a custom build or brand name such as Dell or HP, if it is provide the model name or series number (not serial) providing these details will enable others to better assist you.

NB: In the case of a notebook the battery must be charged or the AC adapter used to provide the power for the display to function.

That's what I thought, so that's why I'm thinking there's something wrong with the monitor itself. I did try the computer with another monitor and it blacked out and showed 'no signal' then popped back up when the next image came up.

As for my computer, the case shows 'Compaq Persario', but when I go into 'system' it says Manufacturer is Hewlett-Packard Company, Model Number CQ5210F.

Also from that page:
Processor: AMD Athlon ™ II X2 215 Processor 2.70 GHz
Installed Memory (RAM): 3.00GB (2.87GB usable)
System type: 64-bit Operating system

I don't know what other information may be needed. I'm not very techy myself, but I'll do my best to answer questions.

Sorry I am a bit confused as in my reply I said;

If I am understanding you correctly what you are describing is normal regarding the no signal to the monitor until you power up the PC

Meaning that your monitor may be ok.

I did try the computer with another monitor and it blacked out and showed 'no signal' then popped back up when the next image came up.

This suggests that the problem may be with your PSU (power supply unit) or you video card/chip.
Please run Speccy and post the results so we can see if you have an add on video card or are using the video chip which is integrated into the MB (motherboard) http://www.piriform.com/speccy

Just a FYI, Compaq is a part of the HP range of products, see the products homepage and you will note a stock 250W PSU is fitted and this is low powered by todays standards http://h10025.www1.h...product=4005896

Whoopsi. Okay. I guess this was a case where we're both speaking a slightly different dialect of English. You: Techy, Me: non-techy where the same words don't always mean the same thing. Sorry for the confusion.

I downloaded that speccy thing and got this (when saved as text document).

Just a FYI, Compaq is a part of the HP range of products, see the products homepage and you will note a stock 250W PSU is fitted and this is low powered by todays standards http://h10025.www1.h...product=4005896

I just checked out the link you posted. I am terrified to ask, but how would a non-techy person go about replacing a PSU, and what should I be looking for? Is this something I could probably handle myself? or would it be best put into the hands of a more experienced person? I'd rather not blow up my computer and/or get electrocuted, but I have done basic maintenance and repair on VCRs (with the help of an internet tutorial), so I'm not completely useless when putting things together. I just don't want to ruin my computer trying to 'fix' it.

EDIT: Okay, I checked out a video on changing the power supply and it looks like I could probably manage it without blowing anything up. I'll continue to look into that on my own, but any advice you can give on a replacement one would be AWESOME

Thanks for the system information
Your MB (motherboard) is using the integrated video chip which can and do fail but not as often as PSUs.
Before you go to the trouble of replacing the PSU please follow my canned speech below for checking out other possible causes;

The following checks require the computer case to be opened so take the following
safety precautions 1st, disconnect the power cord from the wall and take anti static
precautions before touching anything inside, you can do this by touching a bare metal
part of the case.
1: Check the condition of the pc to monitor lead, no bent pins in the end connections
and that both ends are secure (finger tighten only).
2: Remove the Ram stick/s, blow out the slot/s, reseat the Ram securely.
3: Clear the CMOS by removing the MBs silver CR2032 battery for a few moments and then
replace it (see .jpeg below) after clearing the CMOS you will need to go into the BIOS, re-set the time and date and
save (F10) Y to accept the new settings and then exit.
4: Make sure that all fans are working correctly, this includes the PSU.
While the case is open the opportunity should be taken to clean out any heat trapping dust, clean all fans, if canned compressed air is used do not allow fans to spin freely use something like a clean popsicle stick to hold them still and finally make sure that all connections are secure.

Some additional guidance, before replacing a PSU you should get the present one tested by a qualified Tech who has the appropriate equipment and when using canned compressed air for cleaning do not upend the can as it it is possible for fluid to be emitted.
Good luck and let us know how it goes.

Thanks to rshaffer61 for the .jpeg

Okay, so I opened up the computer and blew out the dust with some canned air. made sure both fans I could see (the PSU fan and there's one on the inside too)were clear of dust and pulled the little battery and put it back in and reset the date/time. This hasn't helped the problem at all.

I wasn't able to "Remove the Ram stick/s, blow out the slot/s, reseat the Ram securely." because I'm not sure what the RAM looks like in the computer.

this is what the inside of the computer looks like if that helps:

Have you checked what your power saving options are set up as, I am not suggesting that you change any settings only that you check what they are http://www.sevenforu...ngs-change.html
A video to help you identify your Ram

The inside of your case looks clean, I did notice the brand of your PSU which is Bestec and if you google bestec PSUs you will see the poor reputation that they have, for now just check all the cables from it are plugged into their sockets correctly.

SOLUTION FOUND

Hi folks,

I had this problem with my Videosonic VE170b monitor:  after boot, monitor comes on for just about 1-2 seconds then goes

to black.

Hitting one of the buttons on the monitor (I think auto-adjust) would bring the monitor back again, but for only the same 1-2

seconds.  Repeat hitting the monitor button would again bring it back, but only for 1-2 seconds.

SOLUTION:  Mine was solved by changing the display color quality from high (32-bit) to medium (16-bit).
(YES, I had to repeatedly hit the monitor button and quickly move the mouse to do these steps, which was quite

challenging)

ALT-CLICK on a blank spot of the desktop;  from the dropdown menu, choose PROPERTIES.

Click on the SETTINGS tab, where you'll see COLOR QUALITY dropdown box.  Mine was set to High (32-bit).
I clicked on the dropdown arrow and chose MEDIUM (16-bit), and this solved my problem.

Hope it solves yours!
