Convert mp3 bitrate?

Hello, i have quite a few mp3s on my computer with a variety of bitrates. I was wondering what program could convert a whole batch of mp3s in one go? I mean i use to use cooledit (i think that's what it's called) but that took ages and i had to do each file seperately. Ideally there would be a program that would convert a whole batch but also replace the original files so i won't have 2 copies.
