Connect and external display, see if it works.
If yes then you will need to replace the laptop screen.
If no then there is something else wrong; video chip, processor, memory, power supply or system board.

thanks for your prompt reply. I literally just 15 minutes ago fixed the problem. I removed the battery and reconnected the power cord. Now it works fine, without the battery. Not sure why that would have been the problem, but it worked.
