Hi Geeks,

In need of your assistance again. Problem first appeared yesterday evening when my inbox was full of delivery failed messages with no record of originals being sent by me. Contacted ISP who suspected my email address was being spoofed to mass mail SPAM. So, changed passwords etc and ran MBAM which quarantined "Malware.Gen.EVI" in a file "teamviewer.exe". No other detections from Avast, or a full scan by MBAM and, generally no other weird stuff happening.

However, for peace of mind I attempted to run OTL, but all 3 versions would not run. This has got me worried - should I be?

As ever, grateful for any help, thanks

Please note that all instructions given are customised for this computer only, the tools used may cause damage if used on a computer with different infections.

If you think you have similar problems, please post the appropriate logs in the Malware Removal forum and wait for help.

Hi and welcome back to Geeks to Go. :)

I'm Dakeyras and I am going to try to assist you with your problem. Please take note of the below:

  • I will start working on your Malware issues, this may or may not, solve other issues you have with your machine.
  • The fixes are specific to your problem and should only be used for this issue on this machine!
  • The process is not instant. Please continue to review my answers until I tell you your machine is clear. Absence of symptoms does not mean that everything is clear.
  • If you don't know, stop and ask! Don't keep going on.
  • Please reply to this thread. Do not start a new topic.
  • Refrain from running self fixes as this will hinder the malware removal process.
  • It may prove beneficial if you print of the following instructions or save them to notepad as I post them.
  • Your security programs may give warnings for some of the tools I will ask you to use. Be assured, any links I give are safe.
Before we start:

Please be aware that removing Malware is a potentially hazardous undertaking. I will take care not to knowingly suggest courses of action that might damage your computer. However it is impossible for me to foresee all interactions that may happen between the software on your computer and those we'll use to clear you of infection, and I cannot guarantee the safety of your system. It is possible that we might encounter situations where the only recourse is to re-format and re-install your operating system, or to necessitate you taking your computer to a repair shop.

Because of this, I advise you to backup any personal files and folders before you start.

Next:

I would like to review the MBAM log from the scan you ran removing the infection mentioned if it is still available please.

Scan with DDS:

Please download DDS and save it to your Desktop from here.

Alternate downloads are here or here.

  • Disable any script blocker, and then double click on DDS to run the tool.
  • When done, DDS will open two logs:
  • DDS.txt <-- Will be opened
  • Attach.txt <-- Will be minimized
  • Save both reports to your desktop.
  • Please post the contents of these two Notepad files in your next reply.
When completed the above, please post back the following in the order asked for:

  • How is you computer performing now, any further symptoms and or problems encountered?
  • Requested MBAM Log(if available).
  • Both DDS Logs. <-- Post them individually please, IE: one Log per post/reply.

Thanks for picking this up. Let's hope it's a simple fix.

Here is the information in the order you requested

Hi. :)

Thanks for picking this up. Let's hope it's a simple fix.

You're welcome! We shall see...

Nothing unusual, except that still can't run any version of OTL.

Acknowledged.

Trusteer Rapport Advice:

No real need for this purported security software since you have avast! Free Antivirus installed. I am surmising you use a form of online banking and they in turn advised you download/install. To be quite honest it is far from effective, a system resource hog and if you have a decent Anti-Virus application installed as you do just no need. My friendly advice would be uninstall Rapport but this is at your own discretion to do so or not.

Scan with AdwCleaner:

Please download adwcleaner from here and save to your desktop.

Alternate download is here.

  • Right-click on adwcleaner.exe and select Run as Administrator to launch the application.
  • Now click on the Search tab.
  • Please post the contents of the log-file created in your next post.
Note: The log can also be located at C: >> AdwCleaner[XX].txt >> XX <-- denotes the number of times the application has been ran, so in this case may be something like R1.

Scan with aswMBR:

Please download aswMBR.exe to your desktop.

  • Right-click on aswMBR.exe and select Run as Administrator to launch the application.
  • When prompted with The application can use the Avast! Free Antivirus for scanning >> select No <-- You have the Avast AV installed so would defeat the object to scan with the same database etc.
  • Now click on the Scan button to start scan
  • On completion of the scan click Save Log, save it to your desktop and post the contents in your next reply
Note: There will also be a file on your desktop named MBR.dat(or similir) do not delete this for now it is a actual backup of the MBR(master boot record).

Good morning :)

Trusteer Rapport Advice:

Thanks for the advice. You are spot-on with your assessment that my on-line bank strongly urges customers to use Trusteer Rapport . Incidentally, I have suspended my internet banking pending resolution of this investigation. And, It might seem odd to them if I were uninstall their preferred security protection. But, I shall make a point of discussing it with them once this case is resolved.

And here is the aswMBR log. I left this to run overnight, but strangely the computer had shut itself down by morning. That's not happened before - maybe unconnected? So re-ran this morning. Incidentally, I never got the prompt: "The application can use the Avast! Free Antivirus for scanning" so I hit Scan anyway.

Hi. :)

You're welcome and fair play.

I left this to run overnight, but strangely the computer had shut itself down by morning. That's not happened before - maybe unconnected? So re-ran this morning. Incidentally, I never got the prompt: "The application can use the Avast! Free Antivirus for scanning" so I hit Scan anyway.

Actually the scan is fairly quick without the AV component being used but it has actually been used. Not a problem either way in the great scheme of things. As for why your machine shut down...do you mean it powered down and or went into hibernate mode?

Backup the Registry:

Modifying the Registry can create unforeseen problems, so it always wise to create a backup before doing so.

  • Please go here and download ERUNT.
  • ERUNT (Emergency Recovery Utility NT) is a free program that allows you to keep a complete backup of your registry and restore it when needed.
  • Right-click on erunt-setup.exe and select Run as Administrator to Install ERUNT by following the prompts.
  • Use the default install settings but say no to the portion that asks you to add ERUNT to the Start-Up folder.
  • Start ERUNT either by double clicking on the desktop icon or choosing to start the program at the end of the setup process.
  • Choose a location for the backup. Note: the default location is C:\WINDOWS\ERDNT which is acceptable.
  • Make sure that at least the first two check boxes are selected.
  • Click on OK
  • Then click on YES to create the folder.
Note: If it is necessary to restore the registry, open the backup folder and start ERDNT.exe

Re-scan with AdwCleaner:

  • Right-click on adwcleaner.exe and select Run as Administrator to launch the application.
  • Now click on the Delete tab >> reboot your machine if not prompted to do so.
  • Please post the contents of the log-file created in your next post.
Note: The log can also be located at C: >> AdwCleaner[XX].txt >> XX <-- denotes the number of times the application has been ran, so in this case should be something like S1.

Good Afternoon, :)

The computer had fully powered down. I shall leave it running tonight to see if it happens again.

Install ERUNT

All done and back-up taken.

Hi. :)

The computer had fully powered down. I shall leave it running tonight to see if it happens again.

OK, what exact make and modal is the machine please.

I think we are making progress, and I have also figured out how to use the quote box :)

Aye indeed and good, lets proceed as follows shall we...

Download/Run ComboFix:

Please visit this webpage for download links, and instructions for running the tool:

How to use ComboFix

* Ensure you have disabled all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

How To Temporarily Disable Your Anti-virus, Firewall and Anti-malware Programs <-- Click on this link.

Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply for further review.

Note: If ComboFix detects Rootkit activity and asks to reboot the system, please allow this to be done.

If you receive an error "Illegal operation attempted on a registry key that has been marked for deletion." Please restart the computer.

A word of warning: Neither I nor sUBs are responsible for any damage you may have caused your machine by running ComboFix on your own.
This tool is not a toy and not for everyday use. ComboFix Should Not be used unless requested by a trained Anti-Malware helper.

When completed the above, please post back the following in the order asked for:

  • How is your computer performing now, any other symptoms and or problems encountered?
  • Answer to my computer make/modal query.
  • ComboFix Log.
  • A new DDS Log. <-- I do not need to review a new Attach.txt, just the DDS.txt

Hi. :)

I notice that on rebooting none of my security software (Avast, Zone Alarms and Trusteer Rapport) has started. Should I start these manually?

In theory all should restart again, if not doing so manually is fine. I will be advising temp' disabling again for the duration of the custom ComboFix script below, plus it appears that by the time DDS was re-run all had started apart from ZoneAlarm and Windows Defender, the latter has no need to be enabled anyway.

For future reference if not aware Windows Defender cannot be uninstalled because it is a integral part of the Vista operating system. A graphical tutorial explaining how to to disable correctly can be viewed here.

OTL still won't run, but everything else seems normal.

A good sign apart from OTL. We have not completed the malware removal process yet though.

Did your machine power itself down again ?

Java Advice:

The version installed is out of date and deemed a security risk, so uninstall both Java™ 6 Update 29 and Java Auto Updater.

Regarding a new Java installation, I strongly advise against re-installing a updated version at present because the software as a whole has been severely exploited of late and your machine could end up seriously infected. Even though this exploit has been reportedly fixed there is still a vulnerability with the software.

Your choice if you wish to go ahead and reinstall but as mentioned I advise against it and for the present I do not even have anything Java related installed on my machines.

So let myself know what you wish to do about this in your next reply please.

MSConfig Advice:

Personally I do not think it wise to use the System Configuration Utility unless you know exactly what your are doing as otherwise serious problems may arise.

I advise you consider this application to use instead, it will also provide a extra layer of system protection via its monitoring activities.

WinPatrol:

Download it from here

You can find information about how WinPatrol works here

Note: Do not download/install just yet as it may hinder the malware removal process but by all means do so when I give the all clear if you so wish.

ReBoot::

  • Save this as CFScript.txt and change the "Save as type" to "All Files" and place it on your desktop.

    Posted Image
  • Very Important! Temporarily disable your anti-virus, script blocking and any anti-malware real-time protection before following the steps below. They can interfere with ComboFix or remove some of its embedded files which may cause "unpredictable results".
  • Referring to the screenshot above, drag CFScript.txt into ComboFix.exe.
  • ComboFix will now run a scan on your system. It may reboot your system when it finishes. This is normal.
  • When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Copy and paste the contents of the log in your next reply.
Caution: Do not mouse-click ComboFix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.
If it does, open Task Manager then Processes tab (press ctrl, alt and del at the same time) and end any processes of findstr, find, sed or swreg, then combofix should continue.
If that happened we want to know, and also what process you had to end.

Malwarebytes Anti-Malware:

Note: Remember to right click MBAM's excutible and select Run As Administrator.

  • Launch the application, Check for Updates >> Perform quick scan.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When completed, a log will open in Notepad. please copy and paste the log into your next reply.
Note: If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts, click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process, if asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately. Failure to reboot will prevent MBAM from removing all the malware.

When completed the above, please post back the following in the order asked for:

  • How is your computer performing now, any further symptoms and or problems encountered?
  • Has your machine powered itself down again ?
  • Do you wish to install a updated version of Java ?
  • New ComboFix Log.
  • Malwarebytes Anti-Malware Log.

Good Evening :)

Sorry for the delayed response - lots to do and think about...............

How is your computer performing now, any further symptoms and or problems encountered?

Computer seems fine, except that OTL still won't run

Has your machine powered itself down again ?

I powered down the machine myself last night, as I was reluctant to leave it running with no anti-virus or firewall protection following the 1st run of ComboFix. I shall leave it on tonight with the usual security protections in place.

The version installed is out of date and deemed a security risk, so uninstall both Java™ 6 Update 29 and Java Auto Updater

Java 6 Update uninstalled, but unable to find the Java Auto Updater program - it did not show in the Program list in Control Panel

Do you wish to install a updated version of Java ?

Your advice about Java is very useful - thank you. But, can you tell me what functionality I would lose, if I choose not to re-install Java?.

General:

From my untrained eye, it looks like we are making positive progress. I can see that ComboFix is indeed a powerful tool that must only be used under trained supervision. I was impressed with the use of bespoke command line switches from the script txt file you gave me.

Are you yet able to provide a diagnosis? I am curious that's all

Oh - forgot to add when ComboFix started a dialogue box opened asking whether I wanted to use a newer version. I chose "No" as I wasn't sure how an update might affect things.

Hi, :)

Did your machine power itself down again ?

Hi. :)

except that OTL still won't run

Can you inform myself what exactly happens when you attempt run OTL(you mentioned prior occurs with all three versions), are any error messages displayed ?

unable to find the Java Auto Updater program - it did not show in the Program list in Control Panel

Not a problem, it may have been uninstalled along with the main Java installation.

Your advice about Java is very useful - thank you. But, can you tell me what functionality I would lose, if I choose not to re-install Java?.

You're welcome! As for functionality, nothing really from day to day use of the machine. As for online not that much either, I use all of my machines extensively online and have not noticed anything mentioned about you do not have Java installed/you require Java etc.

Oh - forgot to add when ComboFix started a dialogue box opened asking whether I wanted to use a newer version. I chose "No" as I wasn't sure how an update might affect things.

Technically you could have allowed the update but since what has been updated has not been a issue with your machine, not a problem in the least. Either way being unsure, you undertook the correct course of action by informing myself. If all I assist did as you, it would make things a lot easier for myself.

From my untrained eye, it looks like we are making positive progress. I can see that ComboFix is indeed a powerful tool that must only be used under trained supervision. I was impressed with the use of bespoke command line switches from the script txt file you gave me.

Indeed we are. Aye ComboFix is a very useful tool but does take specific training to use it both correctly and safely.

Are you yet able to provide a diagnosis? I am curious that's all

So far the actual outcome of the malware removal process is most favourable and just one more scan to err on the side of caution.

No - it was still on this morning

OK. Strange occurrence, maybe some one else powered down the machine and neglected to inform you ? As never heard(seen) of malware doing such as would defeat the object there. Feasible it may be due to some faulting hardware but seen no indication of that. If it happens again my best advice would be post a topic in this part of the forum:-

Hardware, Components and Peripherals

Though it may be just one of those things, gremlins in the machine as they say...

Update Mozilla Firefox:

The version you have installed is very old, 2.0.0.11 so the in-built updater will probably be unable to update too the current version.
