Hi guys. My compaq laptop running windows vista wont boot up or repair itself in the recovery manager. I came home from out of town the other night and my laptop wouldnt boot up, just kept restarting. I went to repair your start up and got an error code of : 0x80070002. I also tried safe mode and it stops with the file Loaded: \Windows\system32\drivers\crcddisk.sys. Also when I run the startup repair it says: Root Cause Found: Startup repair has tried several times but still cannot determine the cause of the problem. I have no idea what happened but all my babys photo and all my documents are on that hard drive. Please help me. I have tried everythinng I can think of and nothing is working. The computer was running good prior to that day. Thank you in advance for your time.....

Hi Colleen.

BACKUP! BACKUP! BACKUP! if you have good backups then problems like this are less scary.

First, run chkdsk. Reboot and see if the problem is fixed. If not run SFC and see if that helps.

How to run System File Checker (SFC) or chkdsk from the Recovery Console
  • Boot your Windows 7 installation DVD
  • When you see "Press any key to boot from CD or DVD", press Enter
  • At the "Install Windows" screen, click on Repair your computer at lower left
  • At the System Recovery Options screen, make note of the drive letter assigned to your boot drive (normally C:) and click Next
  • At the Chose a Recovery Tool window, click on Command Prompt. You will be sitting at X:\Sources directory
  • Run SFC or chkdsk
  • If you did not note the drive letter of your boot disk, you can enter bcdedit and look at the osdevice line to see what it is.
  • For sfc, type sfc /scannow /offbootdir=c:\ /offwindir=c:\windows and press Enter (use the letter from above if not C:)
  • For chkdsk, type chkdsk c: /r and press Enter (use the letter from above).
Let either run to completion undisturbed.
If you don't have a install DVD, you can download a legal copy here:
Official Windows 7 SP1 ISO from Digital River

Make sure you get the same version you have installed: 32 or 64 bit; Home Premium, Pro or Ultimate.

Hi I dont have windows 7 I am running windows vista home premium. Also I dont have a recovery disk.. It has its own partition on the hard drive. It is a compaq presario CQ60. I'm sorry I thought I put that in my post. I do have a 2 disk set of vista for my acer laptop that I have used to fix someone elses laptop. I could use that. although I can get to a command prompt from the recovery manager when I start it up because I used it yesterday to try repair the start up. It didnt work but there is a command prompt option. Please let me know what I should do. Thank you again for your help. I know I am a bone head because 2 weeks ago someone stole my external drive and everything was backed up to that once a week. I guess I should have gotten another sooner but I didnt like an idiot. Now I'm paying for it. Sorry ......

You could try the ones you currently have, see if it will let you get to the Repair Your Computer step I show above.

If not, here is the same info as above only it covers both Windows 7 and Vista.

How to run System File Checker (SFC) or chkdsk from the Recovery Console
  • Boot your Vista or Windows 7 installation DVD
  • When you see "Press any key to boot from CD or DVD", press Enter
  • At the "Install Windows" screen, click on Repair your computer at lower left
  • At the System Recovery Options screen, make note of the drive letter assigned to your boot drive (normally C:) and click Next
  • At the Chose a Recovery Tool window, click on Command Prompt. You will be sitting at X:\Sources directory
  • Run SFC or chkdsk
  • If you did not note the drive letter of your boot disk, you can enter bcdedit and look at the osdevice line to see what it is.
  • For sfc, type sfc /scannow /offbootdir=c:\ /offwindir=c:\windows and press Enter (use the letter from above)
  • For chkdsk, type chkdsk c: /r and press Enter (use the letter from above if not C:).
Let either run to completion undisturbed.

Vista or Windows 7: If you don't have a install DVD, you can download a legal copy here:
Official Windows 7 SP1 ISO from Digital River
Download Official Windows Vista RTM with SP1 Setup Files (32-bit and 64-bit)

Make sure you get the same version you have installed: 32 or 64 bit; Home Premium, Pro or Ultimate.

Hi Ztrucker. Sorry it has taken me so long to get back with you. I had a family emergency. Anyways, I ran a chkdsk and the sfc/scannow but to no avail. It still wont boot up. When I go to system restore on the System Recovery Options and try to restore back to an earlier point, this is what I get. System restore failed due to an unspecified error. The system cannot find the file specified. (0x80070002). Also, when I ran the chkdsk, I had to unmount some volume because it keeps saying that it couldn't run chkdsk because it was in use by another volume. So I unmounted it or chose yes because it gave me a choice. But I ran chkdsk twice and even after unmounting the first time around, I had to do it a second time. I'm not sure if that means anything but I thought it was worth mentioning.. Where do I go from here. I hope you have some suggestions. I am sorry about the time you are using up due to my mistake in not buying another external drive in which to back things up right away. Thank you for your help thus far. Hopefully you will have some suggestions.... Praying...........

How are you running chkdsk? Did you create a Vista install DVD or flash drive and is that where you are running it from?

Let's see if we can save your data before doing anything else.

See this tutorial by theog on How to Copy & Paste in Recovery Console on Windows 7 or Vista for a neat trick to use to allow you to Copy & Paste from the Recovery Console to save files and folders.

Read through it and see if it makes sense. If yes then get your pictures and documents backed up to a flash drive.
