Hello everyone .. I have been here before to fix my work computer and thanks to you all my computer is still working wonderfully!! I am now asking for help in fixing my sons computer which is extremely slow and I don't know why really ..

It is a Dell Microsoft Windows XP, professional Version 2002, Service Pack 3, Intel Pentium® 4CPU 3.00 GHz, 2.99GHz. 512MB of RAM.

He only uses to do research for school, and use Microsoft Office Word 2003. he doesn't really use it to save anything but he was not the original user of this computer. A friend of mine gave it to him. It is slow and sometimes freezes for about 5 to 10 min. It also loads slowly when it is first turned on.

I was at the other forum for Windows XP and after doing a few things there the awesome guy who helped me recommended I post here. Aside from being slow and freezing I can not do a disk cleanup. Once I click the boxes to clean and just doesn't do anything after that .. I have let it sit for 5 hours and still nothing it just wouldn't cleanup and finish :(

If anyone can help me I would appreciate it. It may need to have a lot of things deleted and I am OK with that.

Thank you in advance :thumbsup:

Download OTL from
http://www.geekstogo...timers-list-it/
and Save it to your desktop.

Copy the text in the code box:

CREATERESTOREPOINT

Run OTL
Paste (Ctrl + v) the copied text in the box where it says Custom Scan/Fixes

Select the All option in the Extra Registry group then Run Scan.

You should get two logs. Please copy and paste both of them.

Let's also look for errors:

Start, Run, eventvwr.msc, OK to bring up the Event Viewer. Right click on System and Clear All Events, No (we don't want to save the old log), OK. Repeat for Application.

Reboot.

Start, Run, sfc /scannow, OK

SPACE after sfc. This will check your critical system files. If it asks for a CD and you don't have one or it doesn't like your CD just tell it to SKIP.

Start, Run, sigverif, OK

Press Start. This will check your drivers. If you just get a few when it finishes tell me what they are. If you get a lot just look for those with newish dates (since about the time the problem started.)

1. Please download the Event Viewer Tool by Vino Rosso
http://images.malwar...om/vino/VEW.exe
and save it to your Desktop:
2. Double-click VEW.exe
3. Under 'Select log to query', select:

* System
4. Under 'Select type to list', select:
* Error
* Warning

Then use the 'Number of events' as follows:

1. Click the radio button for 'Number of events'
Type 20 in the 1 to 20 box
Then click the Run button.
Notepad will open with the output log.

Please post the Output log in your next reply then repeat but select Application.

This will sometimes show the cause of slow boots.

Now let's look to see what the CPU is up to:

Get Process Explorer

http://live.sysinter...com/procexp.exe
Save it to your desktop then run it (Vista or Win7 - right click and Run As Administrator).

View, Select Column, check Verified Signer, OK
Options, Verify Image Signatures

Click twice on the CPU column header to sort things by CPU usage with the big hitters at the top.

Wait a minute for things to settle down.

File, Save As, Save. Open the file Procexp.txt on your desktop and copy and paste the text to a reply.

And then let's see if we can get a temperature reading and collect some other info:

Get the free version of Speccy:

http://www.filehippo...download_speccy (Look in the upper right for the Download
Latest Version button) Download, Save and Install it. Run Speccy. When it finishes (the little icon in the bottom left will stop moving), File, Save as Text File, (to your desktop) note the name it gives. OK. Open the file in notepad and delete the line that gives the serial number of your Operating System. (It will be near the top about 10 lines down.) Attach the file to your next post.

Adobe Acrobat 5.0 Obsolete
Spam Free Search Bar 1.1.0 Don't want

Download the adwCleaner

  • Run the Tool
    Windows Vista and Windows 7 users:
    Right click in the adwCleaner.exe and select the option
    Posted Image
  • Select the Delete button.
  • When the scan completes, it will open a notepad windows.
  • Please, copy the content of this file in your next reply.

Download TDSSKiller:
http://support.kaspe.../tdsskiller.exe
Save it to your desktop then run it.

If TDSSKiller alerts you that the system needs to reboot, please consent.

Run TDSSKiller again but this time:
before you hit the Scan hit Change Parameters and check the two items under Additional Options. OK then Scan.
In this mode it is prone to false positives so do not change the SKIP option to DELETE unless it says TDSS.
When done, a log file should be created on your C: drive named "TDSSKiller.txt" please copy and paste the contents in your next reply.

Get Process Explorer

http://live.sysinter...com/procexp.exe
Save it to your desktop then run it (Vista or Win7 - right click and Run As Administrator).

View, Select Column, check Verified Signer, OK
Options, Verify Image Signatures

Click twice on the CPU column header to sort things by CPU usage with the big hitters at the top.

Wait 1 minute then:

File, Save As, Save. Open the file Procexp.txt on your desktop and copy and paste the text to a reply.

Start, Run, eventvwr.msc, OK to bring up the Event Viewer. Right click on System and Clear All Events, No (we don't want to save the old log), OK. Repeat for Application.

Reboot.

1. Please download the Event Viewer Tool by Vino Rosso
http://images.malwar...om/vino/VEW.exe
and save it to your Desktop:
2. Double-click VEW.exe
3. Under 'Select log to query', select:

* System
4. Under 'Select type to list', select:
* Error
* Warning

Then use the 'Number of events' as follows:

1. Click the radio button for 'Number of events'
Type 20 in the 1 to 20 box
Then click the Run button.
Notepad will open with the output log.

Please post the Output log in your next reply then repeat but select Application.

Run OTL again, Quickscan and post the log (you will only get one)

Hi I was unable to finish steps from this post .. once I posted the tw logs I had to head out. I did however try to do the "Start, Run, sfc /scannow, OK

SPACE after sfc. This will check your critical system files. If it asks for a CD and you don't have one or it doesn't like your CD just tell it to SKIP."

Part .... It kept asking me for the disk and I will click on cancel but it wont let me continue ... this is what I keep getting and I cant proceed from there....

photo.JPG

Do I then skip this step and proceed with the rest under it before I continue with your last reply?

You can just close the Command Window. SFC doesn't always work as it should on XP. I usually delete the line in the instructions but forgot to this time.

I do want the logs from the steps before the sfc stuff.

The hpdj service in the error log is probably something from an HP Deskjet. If you have already uninstalled it then copy the next line:

sc delete hpdj

Start, Run cmd, OK then right click and Paste or Edit then Paste and the line should appear. Hit Enter.

Did you get an error?

I do want the logs from the steps before the sfc stuff.

Which ones .. thought I posted everything prior ...

The hpdj service in the error log is probably something from an HP Deskjet. If you have already uninstalled it then copy the next line:

sc delete hpdj

I use that printer .... HP Deskjet 5150 .. isnt that the same as hp 5100?? Because if it is then thats the printer that we use on this pc.
